BIRMINGHAM – The Southern women’s basketball team has been selected to the Women’s National Invitational Tournament, the selection committee announced Monday night.
The Jaguars finished 16-13 overall and in second place in SWAC play to league and conference tournament champion Prairie View A&M. Southern will play at New Mexico Wednesday; time of game to be announced Tuesday.
New Mexico (22-10) is the Mountain West Conference representative. The winner advances to play Nebraska, one of 16 teams that has a first-round bye in the 48-team tournament.
The WNIT awards an automatic berth to each of the nation’s 31
conferences. The spot goes to the team that finishes the highest in the regular-season conference standings that does not advance to the NCAA Tournament. If there is a tie, the WNIT abides by the conference tiebreaker. To be considered for a WNIT automatic or at-large berth, a team must have an overall record of .500 or better.
This will be the SWAC’s second berth in the WNIT. Last season, Prairie View A&M lost at Texas State 84-83.
The wnit did a wonderful thing by changing some of its rules to include more women teams.I think that SU women team is a very good selection.Go Gags.
