Gavin Montgomery scored a game-high 14 points to help Arkansas-Pine Bluff slip past Southern, 62-61, in SWAC quarterfinal action on Thursday.
The Golden Lions led by as many as ten points in first half before the Jaguars went on a 15-5 run to tie the game with 4:34 remaining in the half. A couple of key free-throws during the final stretch of the first half would put Arkansas-Pine Bluff up 39-34 at the break.
Despite out-shooting UAPB 41.7 percent to 28.6 percent in second half, Southern couldn’t manage more than a one point lead in the final period. Led by Douglas Scott’s 12 points, the Jaguars committed nine costly fouls in the second half as the Golden Lions again hit key free throws in the waning minutes of the game to secure the victory.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff moves on to the semifinal Friday evening where they will meet number one seed Alabama State at 8 p.m.
