BIRMINGHAM – Jackson State’s Ashley Blakely and Alabama A&M’s Melanie DeCarlo earned top honors as the 2009 SWAC All-Conference Bowling teams were announced. Blakely was named SWAC Bowler of the Year, and DeCarlo was named Freshman of the Year.
Blakely, who was the conference’s top freshman bowler in 2008, posted a 192.77 average in 26 games this season. She had 12 games of at least 200 pins, and bowled a season-high 247 during the West Roundup in Baton Rouge.
DeCarlo had a 192.19 average in 26 games this season. She posted 10 games of at least 200 pins, highlighted by a season-high 224, also in the West Roundup.
Defending conference champion Southern placed four players on the all-conference team, while Alabama A&M had three players on the team. Jackson State and Texas Southern each placed two bowlers on the all-conference team, which is based on averages from conference regular season matches during two roundups held in the fall and early winter.
