(Pittsburgh, PA) The Grambling State Tigers have captured 2008 SBN Black College National Championship honors. Under the leadership of head coach Rod Broadway, the Tigers finished the season with an 11-2 record, a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) leading 22nd conference championship and the schools’ 13th national Black college title.
In the final SBN Black College Poll this season, Grambling State finished with 23 first place votes and 267 points to win the Jake Gaither National Championship Trophy. The award is named in honor of the legendary Florida A&M Rattlers head coach who led his teams to 203 wins and six national titles during a 25-year span. Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) champion South Carolina State, finished in second place. The Bulldogs final poll tally was 233 points and seven first place votes.
Grambling State University will officially receive their 2008 National Championship trophy and third this decade, Saturday, February 14, 2009, during the 35th Annual SBN Black College All-American Awards Weekend at the Omni William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Other honorees will include the 2008 SBN All-American Team, 2008 SBN Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year and 2008 SBN Coach of the Year.
