Tennessee State senior running back Javarris Williams and sophomore safety Eugene Clifford have been named for Ohio Valley Conference honors for their performances in the Tigers’ 30-27 win over UT Martin this past weekend (10/04).
Williams, a 5-11, 220 native of Richmond, Texas was named OVC Co-Offensive Player of the Week, sharing the honor with WR Derrick Townsel of Murray State.
Williams rushed for 163 yards and 1 TD on 26 carries, in TSU ’s crucial 30-27 OT win over UT Martin. Williams bruised the Skyhawks for 107 yards on 16 carries in the second half. This performance marked his 17th career game over 100 yards. Javarris’ most important carries came in OT when he rushed two times for 25 yards culminating in his 11 yd TD run which won the game for the Tigers. Williams also had two pass receptions for 17 yards giving him 180 yards in total yards for the day. His TD was his 8th rushing score of the season.
Eugene Clifford, a 6-2, 195, native of Cincinnati, Ohio was named the Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week. Clifford, a transfer from Ohio State, led all tacklers in TSU ’s 30-27 OT win, recording 11 tackles (5 solo), 1 TFL (3) and 1 Fumble recovery. Clifford’s fumble recovery on the UTM 48 yd line in the first quarter (3:02) led to TSU ’s first score to tie the score at 7-7 (1:21).
