Alcorn State outmatched by North Texas in NIT first round matchup

OFFENSIVE – QB Mark Spivey, Prairie View A&M; 6-5, 220; SR, Houston, TX

Spivey completed 16 of 25 passes for 252 yards with three touchdowns and one interception and rushed 10 times for 77 yards and one touchdown in the Panthers’ 49-15 win at Mississippi Valley State. Spivey completed touchdown passes of 15, 10, and 41 yards in the second, third, and fourth quarters, respectively, and added a one-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter as PVAMU moved to 3-0 for the first time since 1964.

DEFENSIVE – LB Lee Robinson, Alcorn State; 6-3, 245; SR, Gloster, MS 
Robinson made nine tackles (seven solo), two stops for loss, and two quarterback hurries. In addition, Robinson made an interception, had one pass breakup, and a sack in the Braves’ 13-3 home win over the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Robinson made his interception early in the second quarter to end an UAPB drive. In the fourth quarter, Robinson recorded one of five Braves’ sacks in the game. 

SPECIALIST – WR Kiare Thompson, Grambling State; 6-0, 185; SO, Sacramento, CA

Thompson averaged 21 yards on four punt returns, with his longest at 45 yards. Thompson also had one kickoff return for 19 yards in the Tigers’ 14-5 win over Jackson State. His 12-yard return in the second quarter led to the only offensive touchdown of the game. Thompson also had punt returns of 13, 45, and 14 yards in the second half. 

NEWCOMER – LB Alfred Williams, Alabama A&M; 6-1, 235; SR, Atlanta, GA

Williams made seven tackles (five solo) with 0.5 tackles for loss, 0.5 sacks, and one quarterback hurry. The transfer from Duke combined with Cornel Robinson for a third-quarter sack in helping the Bulldogs to their first win of the season over Central State.
