Tennessee State quarterback Antonio Heffner has been named the Ohio Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his play on Saturday, September 6th.
Heffner, a 6-2, 207, senior from Memphis, Tennessee, completed 23-of-29 passes for 315 yards and two touchdowns as Tennessee State topped Southern 34-32 in the 10th Annual John Merritt Classic on Saturday. He also rushed the ball eight times for 68 yards to total 383 yards of total offense on the night which earned him Offensive MVP honors for the John Merritt Classic. He helped the Tigers overcome an 11-point third quarter deficit, including an exciting 81-yard touchdown reception to Chris Johnson to start the comeback.
The Tigers’ win in the John Merritt Classic was their first in three years and this is the first time since 2004 the Tennessee State has opened the season 2-0.
