BATON ROUGE, La.- The Prairie View A&M Panthers captured emotional victories over the Southern Jaguars in Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball action in the two team’s second and third meetings of the tourney.
In game two PVAMU rallied from a deficit to claim a 5-4 win on Southern’s home turf. The win set up a winner take all match-up where the victor would be awarded with an opportunity to participate in the SWAC’s title game where they would face Texas Southern.
The Panthers went on to eliminate the Jaguars from tournament play with a thrilling 15-14 win in nine innings of play. After trailing the majority of the contest SU rallied to tie the game at 11 all going into the ninth inning. PVAMU countered scoring four runs in the top of the ninth highlighted by a Myrio Richard (pictured left) single which brought in a runner and Brandon Hendricks base knock which scored two runners.
Prairie View A&M held Southern to three runs in the bottom half of the inning securing the Panthers their third consecutive trip to the SWAC title game. Adrian Canales was credited with the win as he pitched two complete innings allowing four earned runs on four hits.
The Texas Southern Tigers remain as the only unbeaten team in tournament play as they have amassed a perfect 3-0 mark. TSU got to the championship game by eliminating the Jackson State Tigers from title contention with a convincing 9-2 victory.
PVAMU’s game versus Texas Southern is set for 1:00 p.m. on Monday, May 19th at Lee Hines field located on the campus of SU.
