Baton Rouge, LA – The Tigers of Texas Southern University advance in the winner’s bracket of the 2008 Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball tournament with a, 13-3, pounding of the Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State.
The Tigers wasted no time jumping onto the scoreboard as they picked up four runs in the top of the first inning. From that point on, they remained in complete control, scoring runs in all of but one inning while allowing Valley to pick up all three of their runs in the fifth.
The Delta Devils (18-34) were led at the plate by Willie Mays 3-for-4 performance with an RBI. Paul Olsen and Jeff Squier each recorded two hits. On the mound, starter, Joel Gafford suffered the loss in only two-thirds of an inning of work.
DeShawn Dilworth and Jordan Bush combined for 10 of the Tigers 19 hits. Dilworth hit 5-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBI’s while Bush was a perfect 5-for-5 with four runs scored and two RBI’s. Starter David Arredondo picked up his first win of the season with the complete game victory.
The Delta Devils will return to action tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Lee-Hines Field on the Southern University campus when they face Jackson State in an elimination game. The Tigers advance to Sunday when they will face the winner of the MVSU-JSU game at 10 a.m.
