Baton Rouge , LA —Facing elimination, Alcorn State took control of their destiny and defeated Alabama State 15-4 to survive another day of the2008 SWAC Baseball Tournament. The Hornets were eliminated from the tournament.
The Braves struck early in the first inning with Josh Brumfield scoring an a RBI single by Jabari Graham. Alcorn State scored four more runs to take a 5-0 lead over the Hornets.
Alabama State fought back with Darrion Pedro blasting a triple and later scoring on a Braves’ error. Furquan Shamsud-Din popped a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in Chris Davis for the RBI. The Hornets were down 5-2 at the bottom of the first inning.
Alcorn State was clicking on all cylinders and continued to add to their lead. The Braves added 10 more runs and remained in the front seat of the elimination match throughout the game to secure the win over the Hornets.
Third baseman Brandon Pearce was the Braves front runner with three runs, four hits and 4 RBIs. Darryl Jordan picked up the win for Alcorn State while Marquise Blake recorded the loss for Alabama State .
Alcorn State will face the loser of Prairie View/Southern game at 6 p.m. tomorrow at Lee Hines Field on the campus of Southern University.
