Baton Rouge, LA– The opening game of the 2008 Southwestern Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament provided plenty of fireworks as the #3 Eastern Division seed Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils pounded out a 12-2 victory over the #2 Western Division seed Grambling State Tigers. The Tigers broke a scoreless game in the bottom of the third inning when Brandon Williams led off the inning with a single and scored on a triple into right field by Anthony Clifton. This would prove to be the Tigers lone score until Williams once again scored on a Clifton ground out.
The Delta Devils made their way onto the scoreboard in the sixth inning when Willie Mays and Cody Price both scored on a two-out triple by Joel Gafford. Willie Mays added a two-run home run over the left field fence to give the Delta Devils a 4-1 lead in the seventh. Hogan Barnes and Curtis Ford each added homeruns.
The Delta Devils (18-23) will face the winner of Game 3 featuring the Eastern Division’s top seed Jackson State versus of the Western Division fourth seed Texas Southern tomorrow evening at 4 p.m.. Grambling State (21-26) will face the loser of the same game at 10 a.m. at Lee-Hines Field on the Southern University campus.
