Southwestern Athletic Conference women’s softball will be on display as Texas Southern will play host to Southern University this weekend on ESPNU. The game will be televised live on Friday, April 4 with a 1:00 p.m. (Central Time) start. Southern sits atop the Western Division while Texas Southern is in third place. This series will be a decisive one as the teams march to the conference tournament.
The Lady Jaguars are 17-13 on the season and 6-2 in conference action. Southern picked up two wins at the HBCU Softball Invitational and three wins during the SWAC Softball Round-Up. The Lady Jaguars swept Alcorn State in non-conference doubleheader action in February. Southern swept Prairie View A&M in divisional action (10-2, 8-0 and 3-2). Jasmone Williams leads the team with a .346 batting average, 18 runs, 20 hits and 20 runs batted in. Megan Hodge has recorded 64 strikeouts in 73.1 innings of work.
The Lady Tigers are 7-14 on the season and 5-6 in conference action. Texas Southern split doubleheaders with Northwood University and Prairie View A&M. Texas Southern gained one win in the Grambling State series and swept Arkansas-Pine Bluff (9-8, 12-4 and 10-9). Adrianne Rocha leads the team with a batting average of .465. She also has 33 hits, 23 runs scored and 24 runs batted in.
The game will be the opening game of the divisional series. Games two and three will be played on Saturday, April 5.
The Southwestern Athletic Conference Women’s Softball Tournament will be played April 24-27 at the Lady Panther Softball Complex on the campus of Prairie View A&M University. The top three teams from the Eastern Division will face the top three teams from the Western Division in a double-elimination tournament for the conference title.
