SWAC Bowling Tournament – Day One

swac.gifDay one of the 2008 SWAC Women’s Bowling Championship got off to a hot start as six teams were bowling team games to decide the seeding for the double-elimination bracket. At day’s end, it was Jackson State and Southern claiming the top spots in Saturday’s bracket.

Jackson State – The Lady Tigers were 5-0 on day one and had a pin count of 4,349 … downed Southern 832-807, Texas Southern 918-806, Prairie View 868-750, Alabama State 866-716 and Alabama A&M 865-842 … Ashley Blakley had a five-game mark of 948 while Ryann Richardson had a five-game pin total of 873.

Southern – The Jaguars finished second on day one with a 4-1 record and a pin count of 4,329 … after falling to Jackson State 807-832, they defeated Alabama State 862-660, Texas Southern 945-751, Alabama A&M 832-749 and Prairie View 883-807 … Deneesha Foster had a five-game mark of 905 while Vanessa Caldwell bowled a five-game series of 899.

Alabama A&M – The Bulldogs finished day one with a 2-3 mark and a pin count of 4,168 … defeated Prairie View 799-722 and Alabama State 901-730 … fell to Texas Southern 882-877, Southern 749-832 and Jackson State 842-865 … Nikki McClinton bowled a five-game series of 870 while Tiffany Clark had a five-game mark of 869.

Texas Southern – The Lady Tigers had a day one pin total of 3,984 … downed Alabama A&M 882-877 … fell to Jackson State 918-806, Southern 945-751, Prairie View 852-812 and Alabama State 762-733 … Cieara Watts had a five-game mark of 913 while Chantel Jefferson bowled an 887 over her five games.

Prairie View A&M – The Lady Panthers had a day one pin total of 3,897 … defeated Alabama State 766-693, loss to Alabama A&M 722-799, fell to Jackson State 750-868, downed Texas Southern 852-792 and fell to Southern 807-833 … Kristene Sadler had a five-game count of 800 while Phebe Jackson had a five-game mark of 783.

Alabama State – The Lady Hornets bowled a day one mark of 3,560 … fell to Prairie View 693-766, fell to Southern 660-862, fell to Alabama A&M729-901 and Jackson State 716-866 before downing Texas Southern 762-733 … Syntara Tyler bowled a five-game mark of 712 while Dominique Elston bowled a five-game score of 823.

Bracket play begins on Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Holiday Bowl Fun Center in Bessemer, Alabama. Alabama A&M and Alabama State will meet in one match while Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M will meet in the other. Southern will face the winner of the Bulldogs/Lady Hornets while Jackson State will meet the winner of the Maroon Tigers and the Lady Panthers.
