Bessemer, Ala. – The Lady Jaguars of Southern University and the Lady Bulldogs of Alabama A&M University advanced to the final round of the 2008 Southwestern Athletic Conference Women’s Bowling Championship at the Holiday Bowl Fun Center in Bessemer, Alabama.
Today play was double elimination in the best four of seven baker games. The Lady Jaguars defeated Alabama A&M 4-0. SU had a total pinfall of 752 while the Bulldogs had a total pinfall of 650. The Lady Jags then went on to defeat number one seeded Jackson State 4-0 with a pinfall of 708, compared to the Lady Tigers’ 614.
The Lady Bulldogs had to battle their way through the loser’s bracket to gain an opportunity to defend their title. Alabama A&M started the day off with a 4-0 win over Alabama State. AAMU had a total pin fall of 679 to the Lady Hornets’ 537. After losing to Southern, the Lady Bulldogs defeated Prairie View A&M 4-2-1, knocking down 1155 pins to Prairie View’s 1138. After eliminating the Lady Panthers, Alabama A&M eliminated Texas Southern from the tournament. AAMU won 4-0 by knocking down 713 pins to the Lady Tigers’ 665 pinfall. The team played spoiler yet again, as they eliminated Jackson State, winning 4-2. The Lady Bulldogs had a pinfall of 970 and JSU knocked down 970 pins.
In other play, Prairie View A&M defeated in-state rival Texas Southern 4-3, with a pinfall of 1035 to Texas Southern’s 1013. The Lady Panthers lost to Jackson State 0-4, bowling a 614 to the Lady Tigers’ 792. Texas Southern eliminated Alabama State 4-1. The Lady Tigers had a total of 845 pins while the Lady Hornets knocked down 737 pins.
Play will begin on Sunday, February 24 at 1:30 p.m. at the Holiday Bowl Fun Center and will be televised on ESPNU to be aired at a later date.
