Itta Bena, Miss. — It didn’t take the proverbial third time for Mississippi Valley State to find a charm as the Delta Devils basketball team posted a, 72-60, victory over the league leading Hornets of Alabama State tonight in the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex on the MVSU campus.

Valley came into the much anticipated game looking to pick up ground in a highly contested Southwestern Athletic Conference title race and to do that they would have to knock off the conference giants who were 8-1 in league standings.

The Delta Devils’ Chris Watson turned in his second highest output on the season with 17 points, five rebounds and two assists, steals and blocked shots. Larry Cox turned in another double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Carl Lucas added 13 points and six rebounds. Stanford Speech had the hot hand early and finished with nine points and five assists.

The Hornets (12-8, 8-2 SWAC) Brandon Brooks paved the way for ASU with 16 points. Andrew Hayles and Chief Kickingstallionsims added 14 and 10 points respectively.

The Delta Devils (8-13, 6-4 SWAC) will return to action Monday night when they host the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. in the R. W. Harrison HPER Complex.
