JACKSON, Miss.- The Jackson State Lady Tigers, makes it three straight versus Texas Southern as they extend their SWAC record to 5-1 after dropping their first match of the season last Saturday. In their second overtime game in as many games, the Jackson State Lady Tigers escapes with a 62-54 victory in front of a home crowd 205 fans.
JSU jumped out to an early lead with a three-point bucket by DeQuisha Davis before TSU took an early lead, 6-4 with 15:36 left in the half. With 7:53 left in the first half of play Lady Tigers took a 14-12 lead before Texas Southern went on a 13-4 run with to take a 25-19 lead at the half.
Brandi Justice led all scorers with nine points for Texas Southern, while JSU’s Erica Trahan had six points for the first half.Â
Early foul trouble by Texas Southern helped JSU cut the lead down to three. The TSU Lady Tigers answered with back to back three pointers to take a 43-38 lead with 3:41 left in the game.
Defensive stops by Carena Easley gave JSU a 45-43 lead with 56 seconds in the game. A two point bucket by TSU’s Tina Brown tied the game at 45-45 with 22 seconds left in the game. A missed jumper by JSU sends the game into overtime.
To open overtime play, LaSharee Christian answers with seven straight points to give JSU a 54-49 lead with 2:10 left in overtime. Offensive rebounds and steals by senior, Carena Easley help the Lady Tigers as Jackson State gave Texas Southern all that they could handle.
Next up, the Lady Tigers will play host to Grambling, Saturday January 26. Tip off is set for 3 pm in the Lee E. Williams Athletic and Assembly Center on the campus of JSU.
