ATLANTA – The Mississippi Valley State Devilettes basketball team loss a squeaker to the Panthers of Georgia State University, 64-63, in game one of the 14th Annual Georgia State Invitational. From the onset the game was nip/tuck, as neither team held more than a seven point lead at anytime with the Devilettes holding a 30-28 lead at the half.
The Devilettes were led by forwards Portia Wilson and Ashley Howard.
After having a cool first half, Wilson heated up for 14 points in the second half to lead all scores with 18 and five rebounds. Howard added 12 points and five boards, while center Michelle Messega turned in nine points, four rebounds and a blocked shot.
The host Panthers (3-7), was paced by Shay Rawls, Brittany Hollins and Chandra Harris. Rawls posted a double-double going a perfect 10-for- 10 from the free throw line as she turned in 16 points and 12 rebounds. Hollins finished with 16 points, six rebounds and four assists, while Harris also recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Valley (4-4) will return to action tomorrow at 2 p.m. (est) when they face the loser of the Alcorn State versus Campbell game in the consolation round.
