Burroughs anchored a line that helped provide protection for the offense to amass 441 yards of total offense; a season best. The total offensive yardage for the evening set a new Irwin Belk Complex record.
Receiver of the Week:
Jeremy Franklin, FR., WR, JCSU, 6-4, 185, Casselberry, Fl.
Jeremy had a season and career best 9 receptions for 165 yards and a touchdown vs. Virginia State University. The receptions (9) and yards (165) set a new Irwin Belk Complex record.
Offensive Back of the Week:
Lamar Little, JR., QB, VUU, 5-11, 204, Candor, NC
Little was named Offensive MVP of the 2007 Gold Bowl. He connected on 12 of 22 passes for 216 yards and 4 touchdowns. His performance was highlighted by an 80 yard TD pass. He added 48 yards on the ground.
Defensive Lineman of the Week:
Brandon Smith, SO, LB, VUU, 6-0, 215, Virginia Beach, VA
Smith was all over the field in his performance against Bowie State. He recorded 10 tackles including 2.5 for a loss of 9 yards, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery returned for 11 yards, 1 pass break-up, 1 quarterback hurry and 1 sack for a loss of 3 yards. He entered the contest ranked #4 in the NCAA in sacks and #5 in the nation in tackles for loss.
Defensive Back of the Week:
Kendrell Harley, SR., DB, ECSU, 5-9, 165, Laurinburg, NC
Harley had a solid day in the Vikings’ 55-8 win over Livingstone College with 2 solo tackles, a forced fumble, 2 interceptions totaling 63 yards, including one 15 yard return for a touchdown and 2 pass breakups. His longest interception was returned for 48 yards.
Rookie of the Week:
Julian Poindexter, FR., QB, VSU, 5-10, 180, Bedford, VA
In Poindexter’s first start at Virginia State as a replacement for the injured Michael Terry, he went 10-for-10 in passing for 90 yards and two touchdowns. The true freshman ran for a third touchdown as Poindexter led VSU to a 35-17 win over Johnson C. Smith.
Specialty Player of the Week:
Richard Boone, SO., Kick Return, SAC, 5-9, 165, Petersburg, VA
Boone returned two kicks for 124 yards including an 82-yard return, which set up a Falcon touchdown in the second quarter. His 42-yard return to open the game, set up a Falcon field goal. Overall, his two returns set up all of the Falcons’ points (9).
Coach of the Week:
Willard Bailey, Saint Paul’s College
Coach Bailey led his Tigers to their second conference victory and second victory in a row with their win against Saint Augustine’s College.
