Houston, TX – Robert Moreland was named Interim Coach of the TSU Men’s basketball team today by Interim President J. Timothy Boddie, Jr. Moreland who currently serves as Assistant Provost for Athletic Enhancement will coach the team for the 2007 season. He follows Ronnie Courtney whose contract expired earlier this year. “We felt it was important to have a coach on board as expeditiously as possible, at the same time, we realized it was too important of a decision to rush. Having Coach Moreland assume the Interim role allows us time to make a thoughtful search for a permanent coach,” stated President Boddie.
Moreland has a long storied history with TSU Athletics. He remains the winningest coach in TSU basketball history having coached the men’s basketball team for 26 years. As coach, Moreland coached the Tigers to one national championship, ten SWAC championships, made three NCAA appearances and produced two SWAC Hall of Fame inductees. “I am excited to be back at the helm of TSU Men’s basketball. I have dedicated my career to TSU athletics because of my love for the program and my care and concern for our student athletes. This is a great opportunity for me to help the university as it transitions to a permanent coach.” Coach Moreland will be inducted into the SWAC Hall of Fame on December 13, 2007 in Birmingham, Alabama.
“Coach Moreland is a welcome and familiar face among both our student athletes and our alumni and we are looking forward to a dynamic season of TSU basketball,” added Athletic Director Alois Blackwell. Practice will begin on October 13, 2007 and the TSU Tigers will face Texas A&M at Corpus Christi on November 10, 2007.
