Tell the Truth and Shame the Devil – Open Thread Friday

As a well known TSPN poster would say, “This much hate can’t be healthy.” But it seems that some Mississippi Valley State fans, whose mascot is “The Delta Devil”, are sending a clear message about their feelings for Jackson State. Prior to this week, I honestly had no idea Valley fans felt this way about the people from J-State.

This is your Friday open thread. Feel free to discuss whatever.

First of all, isn’t there enough hate going in the Our World, Our Country, Our State, Our City, Our Community; our Race? Why do we have to extend that hate to our HBCU’s…the places of Higher Learning and enlightenment? Its understood, that we all have School by School rivalry but do we really have to take to the extreme of hating? Honestly, its not that serious. Lets focus our attention on Jena, LA and other inequalities that we all experience each day, when we leave the safety and comfort of that HBCU and face the real world.

I think everyone is going to too far with this topic. Keep in mind we are the Delta Devils, I repeat Devils!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is our mascot. In our psychologically minds where does the devil live in hell. Although I’m a christian, this could very well be mistaken. But this is just pure fun, saying you’d rather go to Mississippi Valley state university, where the devils are, then Jackson state. Please stop the crazy stuff!!!!!!!

As a person that has attended MVSU (’96-’99), I totally understand and have experienced the “hate” between both institutions. However, the thing that a lot of people do not realize is that this is, and has been, a friendly rivalry that has gone on since the beginning of time. The problem when it relates to athletics is that my school has focused so much on beating J-State and not so much on finishing with a winning season. The rivalry is good, because at the end of the day, we all have fun together, but MVSU needs to focus less on that one game and more on the other 11 games of the season. Go Devils!!!!!

    To Reginald
If JSU didnt sweat Valley why do they get soo overly hyped for the game. They know its a big game to play esp when its not in Jackson. They cant cheat as bad.

I understand, why Valley feel so bad. JSU have beaten Valley since 1950 over 40 times. MVSU has beaten us 5 times in the history. However, it is a friendly rival among neighbors. In fact two of my best friends are MVSU alumni and we joke with each others each time we play. Also, JSU suppose to win we have more resources and are able to get better players. JSU is only school that valley has played every year since it begin in 1950.

    Leo,

Come on now…Overly Hyped? It’s a yawner to most JSU alumni. Tiger support is tiger support. Of course we come out. We will cheer the team and the Boom but really by 4th quarter we on to the next thing. Why do you think half the people that are there at the beginning are usually gone? Regardless of the score, real hype does not leave that quickly.

The Valley vs JSU rivalry is not hate. It’s more school spirit. We love our Valley and nothing can ever replace that deep Valley spirit that we show. We may not beat JSU that much, but we still support our school. JSU fans think we not suppose to stand up for our University, but that will never happen here at Mississippi Valley State University – The Educational Oasis of the Delta!!! Go Delta Devils!!!!
