Offensive Lineman of the Week:
Garry Battle, Fayetteville State, OG, 6-1, 318, SR, Hope Mills, NC
Battle was instrumental in opening holes and providing protection for his quarterback in the Broncos’ 34-26 loss to Wingate. Through his effort, the Broncos were able to amass 375 total offensive yards (126 rush and 249 passing).
Receiver of the Week:
Davian Richardson, Virginia State, WR, 6-1, 190, SO, Orlando, FL
Richardson led all receivers with five catches and also threw for a touchdown in VSU’s 52-21 loss to Carson-Newman College on August 23, 2007 in Jefferson City, TN. In the second quarter, Richardson hauled in a lateral from VSU quarterback Michael Terry and hit Jerome Choice for a 72-yard touchdown strike.
Offensive Back of the Week:
Bryan Hardy, Fayetteville State, QB, 6-2, 200, JR, Vanceboro, NC
In his first start as a Bronco, Hardy threw 180 yards (29-17) and ran for 23 yards as FSU fell to Wingate University in the closing moments of the contest.
Defensive Lineman of the Week:
Tiquan Collins, Shaw, LB, 6-1, 235, SO, James City, NC
Collins led the Bears with 10 total tackles. He had 1 sack for a 7-yard loss in the Bears’ victory.
Defensive Back of the Week:
Fred Hoskins, Johnson C. Smith, DB, 5-11, 185, SR, Garland, TX
Fred had an outstanding day recording 6 tackles (2 solo, 4 assisted), 1.0 for a loss of 5 yards and one pass break-up. His most impressive play was a 30-yard blocked punt returned for a touchdown…the first of his career.
Rookie of the Week:
Rodney Webb, Bowie State, RB, 5-9, 208, FR, Baltimore, MD
Webb rushed for a team high 78 yards on 11 carries (longest of 21 yards) and scored one touchdown in his first collegiate contest.
Specialty Player of the Week:
Eric Lamoureux, Fayetteville State, K/P, 6-0, 188, SR, Rocbury, NH
Lamoureux connected on four of five field goal attempts, his longest a 50 yarder which established a new school record. He had FG’s of 20, 36, and 30 yards. He also had four punts for 133 yards, averaging 33.2 yards.
Coach of the Week:
Daryl C. McNeill, Sr., Johnson C. Smith
Coach McNeill led his team to a 24-0 shutout of Edward Waters. This was the first season opener shutout of an opponent since 1996 when Daryl McNeill led this team to a 35-0 shutout over Benedict College.
