Texas Southern University earns prestigious and coveted aviation accreditation

TSU becomes just the second HBCU in history to achieve AABI accreditation, widely regarded as the gold standard, for an in-house aviation professional pilot program.

“The aviation program at TSU has experienced an upward trajectory for many years, and this prestigious accreditation is a major step in accelerating future progress,” said interim president Dr. Mary Evans Sias. “We know this was an arduous process, and I am TSU PROUD of the faculty and staff of our aviation program, led by Dr. Terence Fontaine, who collaboratively executed with excellence. The result is an affirmation of what we have known to be true: the aviation program at Texas Southern University is one of the best in the nation.”

Texas Southern joins the ranks of 43 other aviation programs around the world, and now boasts the only AABI accredited aviation program in the state of Texas.

Texas Southern's aviation program reaches new heights as HBCU's newest plane arrives at Ellington​

Terence Fontaine and his flight instructors squint north at a sparkling set of lights in the distance, a brand new Cessna barely in view.

It’s a clear day on Wednesday, some headwinds. The plane appears to get larger over the hills, and the instructors clap as it approaches Texas Southern University’s hangar at Ellington Airport.

One of their students, a sophomore, is in the pilot’s seat, delivering the Cessna off the factory line from Kansas. He nears the ground but hovers for yards before he lands – a bit of flair that amuses his teachers.
“He’s showing off,” Fontaine laughs.

The instructors flock to the spot the student will pull in next to a few Cessnas, two Grummans and one Piper Seneca. Most of them are close to 50 years old, and the arriving Cessna – the ninth plane in the historically Black university’s fleet – is special for its novelty.
