The One Man Band
I know it's late, but I just ran across this piece covering the Honda BOTB. Some of the facts of the story are a little off, but the point remains the same.

Mark Lassiter, our resident sport guru, has written a feelgood piece
about the splendor and excellence of our HBCU marching bands.
Like it or not, the great marching bands of our schools have been
instrumental in generating fame, acclaim and revenue for our
schools. The story line of Drumline is all about the intense
competition that drives our school bands to higher heights.
When you consider Mark's column ( Feb, 16, 2004) about FAMU's flawed decision to step into Division I football competition only to discover that
it could not effectively compete, the reality of the need for the band competitions becomes even clearer.
As he relates, only in our arena can David slay Goliath.
The emergence of Prarie View A & M as the victor over
FAMU and other giants in the band competition world
is the stuff of great stories and bragging rights for a
long time....
