No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz Out of US Open After Stunning Upset by Botic van de Zandschulp

World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz's hopes of a third straight major titled ended with an upset loss to No. 74 Botic van de Zandschulp in the second round of the 2024 U.S. Open on Thursday night.

Van de Zandschulp defeated Alcaraz in straight sets 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 to claim victory at Arthur Ashe in New York.

Alcaraz had entered the tournament having won Wimbledon and the French Open earlier this season.
He recently suffered a defeat to Novak Djokovic in the gold medal match at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Thursday night marked the first time Alcaraz has been ousted from a major tournament in the second round since 2021, when he was eliminated at Wimbledon by Daniil Medvedev.

The second-round match meanwhile represented the highest-ranked victory of van de Zandschulp's career.
The 28-year-old Dutch professional made it as far as the quarterfinals during the 2021 U.S. Open. Van de Zandschulp is now set to face Jack Draper on Saturday as the 2024 edition of the tournament continues into the third round.

Djokovic Loses to Popyrin: Updated US Open Men's Tennis Bracket After Friday Results

There will be a new U.S. Open winner after defending champion Novak Djokovic was stunned by Alexei Popyrin 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in the third round on Friday night.

The updated bracket for the U.S. Open is led by No. 1 seed Jannik Sinner preparing to take on Christopher O'Connell in the third round on Saturday at 1:15 p.m. ET.
The loss came one day after Carlos Alcaraz was upset by Botic van de Zandschulp. This marks just the second time in the last 10 Grand Slam tournaments that won't feature at least one of Djokovic or Alcaraz in the final (2022 French Open).

Friday's defeat also ensures that Djokovic won't win a Grand Slam title in this calendar year for the first time since 2017. This was also the earliest in one of the four big tournaments he has lost since Denis Istomin beat him the second round of the 2017 Australian Open.
"I have played some of the worst tennis I have ever played, honestly," Djokovic told reporters after his defeat. "Serving—by far—the worst ever."
This also the first time since 2002 that none of Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer won a Grand Slam tournament.

He could have used coaching away from his family. When he went under the USTA for coaching he was doing better, then the parents took control again, it was the ending of his good times in tennis. He is playing mixed doubles with Taylor Townsend.

Forever Young: Donald Young makes one last US Open appearance

If there’s a tennis equivalent to the so-called “bonus baby,” that archaic label once applied to baseball phenoms who as teens inked eye-popping contracts, many of them still unproven commodities, it’s Donald Young.

A fiercely talented lefthander who first picked up a racquet at age three, the Chicago-born Young turned heads early on. After winning the Easter Bowl 16s in 2003, the first American to do so since Hall of Famer Jim Courier in 1986, he would become the youngest-ever, year-end No. 1 in the ITF rankings. Agents hovered. The racquet companies and the shoe and apparel brands lined up to back him. By 2004, Young, then just 15, had turned pro.

Success didn’t come overnight for the prodigy. In fact, he lost his first nine matches at the ATP Tour level without so much as winning a set. Playing in the spotlight, there was plenty of scrutiny and plenty of second-guessing by many across the sports world, including those of us in the media. Had he been mishandled? Had he been rushed along too quickly?
