This sums it up pretty well I think. The only part I dont buy here is the Merovingian being the devil.

THE MATRIX TRILOGY EXPLAINED - HONESTLY
by Mike J. Wash
Nov 6, 2003

Let me first say I PROMISE YOU WILL LOVE THIS TRILOGY IF U READ THIS.

I apologize if my email does not follow the rules of this forum, but I felt I could offer you a very clear explanation of the Matrix series in light of reading your reviews of the Matrix Revolutions. The bottom line is people don't understand it. So this is a crash course for anyone who wants answers. Real one's, not some fanboys idea of what it's about. Please note, SPOILERS ARE ALL THROUGH THIS REVIEW.

Here we go with the basics.

Zion is real! The Matrix is not.

The Matrix was designed to provide a mental stimulus for the human bodies connected to the machines as a source of power. This is the sixth version of the Matrix. There have been multiple versions of the Matrix because of a flaw in the program (kinda of like Windows). That flaw is giving individuals the ability to choose.

The first Matrix was designed as a perfect uptopia (see pt. I - Smith explains it to Morpheus; pt. II - The Architect explains it again) but humans did not accept it as real so they just kept waking up. It was redesigned to reflect our civilization at it's last stage before it was taken over by the machines (the year 1999).

The Architect's problem with this new design (the anomoly)of the Matrix is that it require individuals to think freely, i.e. choice. It was the Oracle that suggested he redesign the Matrix in this way. But since humans have choices, so must the programs sent to watch over them, i.e. The Agents, thus bringing us the problem that is Mr. Smith. In Reloaded, The Architect continues to speak of the anomoly he is unable to get rid of, which is why at some point, he feels the only solution is to destroy the Matrix and those who are aware of it (the people of Zion) and start from scratch again.

The Oracle says it clearly in Revolutions. Mr. Smith is the result of the anomoly trying to balance itself. Mr. Smith began to think freely (see part I where he is freaking out while interrogating Morpheous) and the result was a negative one. Realize this, he is a similar program to the One so he is far more dangerous than a normal individual who makes bad decisions. Mr. Smith's virus like behavior happened in EVERY VERSION OF THE MATRIX. The result would always lead to the same thing -- a system crash if they didn't quickly reboot the system. The same knee jerk reaction you have when you realize someone has sent you a virus.

The One program was created to solve this problem. But each version of the One ultimately failed. Neo is different, in Reloaded he choose the door that led to Trinity, not the door that RESETS the program. Note: The Architect even noticed that Neo's experience in the Matrix was different than all the rest, realizing he was the first of them to fall in love.

Onto Revolutions:

Neo's choice has changed everything. The system is still threatened by Smith's behavior, so the Oracle makes a new choice; one she has never done before because no version of the One has ever chosen the difficult path as opposed to easy one of just resetting the system. She allows herself to become merged with Smith in the HOPE that she'll be able to help Neo when the time is right.

Neo makes another unique choice. He goes to the machines and asks for PEACE as opposed to simply destroying the system by going through the opposite door as all other versions of the One did. It was a simple as that to save Zion. Machines don't need very long to process that this may be a better idea than just constantly resetting the system.

At the end, Smith says to Neo the movies tagline - "Everything that has a beginning has an end," as the Oracle is speaking to Neo through Smith. Neo realizes it all along, the only way to end this is to sacrifice himself. The Oracle noted that Neo and the Source (the computer mainframe, the Architect they're all one and the same so don't get confused) are connected which is why he can control machines outside the Matrix. He uses this connection to his advantage. He becomes a Mr. Smith and since all the Smith's are connected, the Source now has a lock on Smith and simply deletes him. Pretty simple huh?

For those that like to dig deeper, than note the biblical references throughout the series. Heck, the French Man (Merovigchian) is the Devil, just read the elevator button Morpheous presses when he goes to see him for the second time. The Architect represents God - i.e. the creator of the world and its destroyer whenever things don't go as he wants. He even has you to chose a select group of people to restart Zion again sort of like Noah's Ark. Neo is Jesus, the one who realizes that peace and love is the answer, not war. And the Oracle represents the Holy Spirit - the conciousness that resides in all of us. It's a deep trilogy if you PAY ATTENTION.

Thanks

I wish I had read this before seeing the movie last night. What a great concept. I left out of the movie confused trying to sought it out.

It was rather easy to peep out the analogies to the bible in the second one.

1) Look at how Neo is dressed. He wears a catholic priest's coat.

2) He brings Trinity back from the dead.

3) If Neo is to Jesus, then that makes Morpheus John the Baptist.

I could go on and on but there is no point.
It was a good movie (trilogy) though.

wbishop:

In parody, Neo was probably more like Moses than John the Baptist (as aluded to in the other thread).

See? When I said that many questions were answered, I got jumped on! :D

I wasn't gonna try to spoil the movie with my own theory (just pretty much said that I enjoyed it)...it wasn't until later that it became a spoiler thread. :)

That was a great e-mail.

Ntelekt

Ntelekt,

I said that NEO was more like Jesus. Morpheus is the one that is like John the Baptist. Meaning he is the one person who believed in the one and really fortold of his coming.

Re: Ntelekt

I was explained this after I saw the movie. I liked the movie alot more after it was explained...

I am going to see it again.

Matrix Timeline

I saw this somewhere and wanted to add it to the conversation

Timeline: When Is 'The Matrix'?

What is the Matrix?

That's an old question. The real head-scratcher is:

When is the Matrix?

Using background culled from the three movies and "Animatrix" shorts, The Associated Press compiled an estimated timeline of the war between men and machines:

2010-60 ? Humans create humanoid drone robots with Artificial Intelligence to fill jobs as construction laborers and servants.

2069 ? The hovercraft transport ship Nebuchadnezzar, later to be captained by Morpheus, is constructed in the United States.

2075 ? AI programs evolve and some robots began to resent their human overlords.

2077 ? In the first case of a machine rising up against its owners, the butler robot B166ER slaughters two humans, leading to B166ER's eradication and a backlash against robots and artificial intelligence.

2080-85 ? Rioting and violence against machines prompts robots to flee major cities and establish their own community ? known as Zero One ? in a remote part of the Middle East.

2085-2095? Zero One thrives, creating superior vehicles, computers and weaponry and decimating the economies of many human nations, which now lack the machine-based labor that made them strong.

2096? United Nations officials refuse to accept the robot civilization of Zero One as a sovereign nation. A trade blockade of robot goods leads to war.

2097 ? Zero One survives a nuclear attack ? its inhabitants are impervious to the heat and radiation and casualties are quickly replaced. Counterstrikes launched against humans.

2098 ? As cities fall beneath the might of mechanized forces, desperate military leaders attempt to block the main source of energy for the robot city: the sun. The plan destroys the atmosphere and fills the sky with choking black smoke ? but does not stop the machines.

2099? Machine forces overtake human armies and capture survivors and civilians for experimentation, determining that human bio-electricity can be harnessed to replace the sun's energy.

2100 ? Machines create the Matrix, a dream-like world set in 1999, to extend the lives of the comatose human batteries.

2105 ? The first human known as The One, locked in bondage inside the Matrix, learns he can manipulate the world through thought and manages to break free. Seeks sanctuary in the underground human stronghold of Zion.

2105-2150 ? Zion resistance movement created, although The One later dies under unexplained circumstances.

2161 ? Morpheus born in a Matrix womb; freed in childhood.

2167 ? Trinity born in a Matrix womb; freed in early childhood.

2175 ? The Oracle prophesizes that Morpheus will discover the second coming of The One.

2199 ? Trinity and Morpheus discover Neo, a hacker in the Matrix. They free him and do battle with Agent Smith, a program designed to rid the Matrix of humans who detect its flaws.

2201 ? The Osiris, another human rebellion ship, discovers machines drilling through the Earth above Zion. Crew members send a message through the Matrix to their compatriots shortly before being destroyed.

2201 ? Now living in Zion and working with the rebellion against the machines, Neo encounters The Architect, the artificial intelligence program that created the Matrix.

2201 ?The Architect reveals that the Matrix places rebellious humans in Zion, which it then targets for destruction, thus eradicating "bugs" in its system. He states that Zion has been destroyed five previous times ? suggesting the Matrix may be much older than he thinks.

Okay, now I can discuss this with all the info....

I finally got to see III or Revolutions and I can say that my theory was on point with one exception.

<marquee>Everything...Below...This...Point...Is...A...Spolier!!!!!!</marquee>

<center>
header-title.jpg

I thought the Oracle was the ?Holy Spirit? and I
was wrong. After seeing Revolutions it is very
clear that the Oracle is GOD.

Oracle = GOD
The Architect = Machine God
</center>

My basis for this is simple:
? She changed forms. (however necessary that may have been)
? She killed Smith. (She got involved, even he was surprised as to why she would be there when she knew he was coming)
? She is the one always talking about Volition, which is what God based ?his? relationship with Man on.
? She never interferes and only tells people what they need to hear to do what they have to do.
? She knows everything, hence is omnipresent
? All the other powerful characters hate her. (The Merovingian & The Architect)
Clues were all over the place, and still I didn't get it. :shame:
? Did you guys catch how "The Architect" was the face Neo saw when he went into the machine world? ;)
? All the symbolism came to a head at the end when the Architect asked the Oracle how long she thought it would last, rememebr her answer?

<center>So you see although Jesus? representation was a white boy
(who is really Chinese & Hawaiian),

God is represented by a Black woman.
:nod2:

Imagine if Will Smith had taken the Neo role
(he was the filmmakers first choice to play Neo).
Jesus and God would have been black.
</center>

<center>++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++</center>
<center>The Merovingian is clearly Satan.</center>

Case for the Merovingian being Satan:
? The oracle saying he was one of the oldest programs (in ll). That he was set for destruction and went underground, hiding in the Matrix. (Sounds like a fall from grace to me)
? The vampires & ghosts working for him.
? The sheer seduction of him, he is smooth the way only satan can be (He even tempted a woman in ll).
? His calling Neo, their "savior" (in III)
? The Indian man making a point of saying that the Merovingian "never forgets or forgives".
The Biggest Clue of all was in III....
? When They (Morpheous, Trinity, & S) go to visit the Merovingian they got into an elevator & pushed a red button labeled "Hel" the last "L" was smudged off. They went to Hell to see him.
? When he asked Trinity to bring him the eyes of the Oracle what he was really saying is that he wants her sight, her omnipresence, her power (everyone that has ever picked up a bible knows that all satan has ever wanted was to be GOD).
? He has a wife, he is the only one who has a wife.

My Answers to other Questions from the previous thread.

Neo's state of being in "between worlds" was nothing more
than purgatory. "The Trainman" wasn't a big part of the
movie, just another program. Satan has many people working
on his behalf.

What was the point of all the nationalities?
Look to the bible...

Is Neo Dead?
Yes, Neo as we know him is dead.
Did anyone catch how he was stretched out like he was on a cross?
Why?: because he did his job, he was only a manifeststion of GOD.
(although tehnically he cannot die because he was only a manifestation
of God) The next manifestation is the little girl.

What the point of the sun at the end?
C'mon, think about what a rising sun symbolizes?a new
beginning, a new day. Especially when you consider the sky
was scorched and the sun hadn?t been visible since the war began.
What does light symbolize? God (i.e. God is the light of the world)

I liked and enjoyed the movie, although I'm sure it was over a lot
of peoples heads. If you didn't pay attention in the first two films
and were caught up in the fight scenes and special effects it was
probably foriegn, but it was all there. This was the end of a trilogy
, and wrapped everything up. You have to think. The story
never ends, it can't it is the story of the continuing fight between
good and evil. So for those people looking for a giftwrapped, and
packaged storybook ending they were in the wrong place.
Like it or not you have to admit the story got you thinking....
it has to it's the "Greatest Stroy Ever Told"...
;)

Jada can be my driver anyday. Narobi was awesome!
Trinity was awesome to, when she put the gun to ole bway's head...that was gangsta.

My bad, man. :)

I meant to say that I likened MORPHEUS to Moses, as opposed to John the Baptist.

Crumbs to Bricks...

It ain't that serious people. Either you get the movies or you don't.

lol

Rraaa, God or the "holy spirit" was smoking cancer sticks and baking cookies w/ an Indian girl.

The Oracle changing form didnt have anything to do with her being GOD....the only reason they had to change the character was because the original Oracle died after they filmed Reloaded....I dont know about that theory. As I said in the other thread, nobody will ever know exactly who or what this movie meant unless the W. Brothers come out and explain it. Architect the machine god?

Im with you on that Penny. How was the Oracle God, and Neo Jesus? Was The Oracle Neos Mother? No. In fact she was the Mother of Smith, and he even called her mom in Movie 3.

At what point in time did the Oracle kill Smith? I musta missed that part.

If the Merovingian was the devil, why didnt he flex any muscle at any point in the movies? All he did was get his deeack sucked, standby as Morp and trin escaped with the keymaker and let trin put a pistol to his head and make him give Neo back. Why would the devil be afraid of a gun? I think the merovingian was simply a dealer in information and things. He had the keymaker and the train guy under his control.

There is a little too much fan boi and fan gyrl commentary out there on the Matrix from folks that saw each movie once and want to put their 2 cents in. I guess Zee must be an Angel Gabriel because Aaliyah died and Nona took over or some other contrivance.

I agree with the religous theories but I have my own on a couple of things. First I think Neo was really a program created by the machines to balance the equation mentioned in the 2nd movie. The Architec mentioned that 99.99% of all those in the Matrix would except the program as is. The re- occuring problem was the .01%. Well like any anlytical mind you want to be able to control your variables so why not create the .01%. I think Neo's mind was a program designed to lead the .01% of the population to a pre-ordained end that was aceptable to the machines. As many people that were set free from the Matrix, the Zion rebellion was really insignificant as far as numbers are concernd ( made apparent by the size of the fields of humans seen in 3). This would explain why Neo was able to see the Machines as data (the glowing code at the end of the film), and was able to maintain a connection with machines while not jacked in. This would also explain why he was able to enter the program world without being plugged in. Agent Smith demonstrates the ability to manefest his program in flesh, so it would stand to reason that the machines could design a program to operate as flesh. In the 2nd film the Architec shows Neo the many version that have been created. Question? Why would they all look the same if they were not all clones of each other. Also they all seemed to be either insane or cold. Traits apparent in most of the prgrams displayed throughout the movie. Like someone else said in order to make a human like program you must also give it free will or the ability to choose. Because the Architec only thinks in probablities and equations, love was not taken as a consideration. Thus, this Neo becomes different than the rest. He is more determained, more focused, and ultimatly more powerful (as said by the frenchman in 2).

Second, i don't think Neo died. I think his program mind was rejoined with source. This remaines consistent with the "Jesus theory" in that when Christ hung, bleed, and died on the cross only his flesh was sacrificed. His soul is seated at the right hand of the Father. When Neo goes to the source at the end of 3 he is forced to argue for mans right to live, simular to Christ conversation with god on the cross. He then accept the fate of man as his own in order for them (man) to recieve undeserved mercy ( i say undeserved because of the constent attempt made by the machines to live at peace with man shown in the Animatrix). He then suffers for man( fight with Smith...arse kicked) as Christ did when he took on the worlds sins and was sent to hell. If you notice at the end when Neo's body is being carried away into the machine city he is glowing. This signifies that although his body is lifless his program mind (soul) will live on as a part of the source (God). In the last minutes of the movie the little girl ask the oracal if they will ever see Neo again. Her response was maybe... meaning that there is a possibility of his return.

I thought the Oracle's answer was "Yes". But, I've only seen it once. Maybe I'll figure out the line on my umpteenth viewing :D

But I agree; they've given Neo a Christ metaphor. He suffered and died for the freedom of man. I don't think Neo was a program; rather, he was connected to the machine "god" or The Source, as was stated earlier, because he was the anomaly. I don't consider it an exact Christ metaphor because he was unaware of himself and his choices until the time came, and he was unsure of himself and his purpose until the very end.

The first movie made Neo look like Moses to me; he was to lead his people to freedom, but it he was unsure of his ability to do so. It took a power within him and convincing from another "god", Oracle, to make him realize his destiny. But the Christ metaphor does connect Morpheus better. I viewed him as Aaron, Moses' brother and helper. But he is a better metaphor of John the Baptist, the one who prepares the world for the savior. So, I guess their intent was Neo as a Christ, though an imperfect one.

That makes Smith the evil in the world that punishes Neo. No wonder Smith took over EVERYONE in the Matrix!! He had to become the people who crucify Neo in order for the sacrifice to be complete. And his absorbing Neo was the final death for Neo but also, as was stated earlier, the means by which the Source could regain control, destroy the evil in the world (Matrix) and offer freedom to anyone who chooses it. But it couldn't happen except through Neo. I abosutely LOVED the ending!! When I realize that Neo had to sacrifice himself, to bleed & die, I was floored!

Go head, Wachowskis!!

I saw the movie this weekend and it was off the chain.

I think the movie is about a computer game with a matrix program inside the computer program.

Neo stops the Sentinels with his hands and thoughts, he is blinded, then he sees some organge like code.

Hmmm , I don't think that can happen in the physical realm as we know it. At the end of the movie, after the battle, everything RESETS (like a computer game) back to normal.

My reasoning, in the movie, none of the characters ever mentioned anything about the current religions of today.

I would think if that was the real physical realm, as we know it, there would be some mentioning of the current world religions, or some reference to anything familiar as a major landmark as we know of today, i.e. New York City, Los Angeles, etc.

That was my .02.

But like Unknown1 said, we won't know what the movie is really about until the Wachowski brothers let the fans know what the movie is really about.

Other than that the movie is off the chain.

I remember when I saw the first movie, I walked out of the theatre thinking that it was a great movie but it was too complicated for the american public. I was shocked that it was such a big hit.

I really enjoyed to change in this thread.

I think that the reason that some are having problems with the theory that is presented here is that the theory is lacking. It is lacking in this regard: the theorist tries to force a particular spiritual path where there is none. The Creator/Saviour/Advisor/Adversary story is prevalent in many cultures and many mythos. In fact, the concept of an imperfect Creator who has to "reset" the creation over and over is a Gnostic concept which was borrowed from earlier Pagan concepts, for example.

A strict Christian reading of the story leaves a great deal to be desired. A more holistic approach is enlightening, IMO. I would recommend reading The Hero of a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell (as well of his Masks of God Series) for a cultural, literary, and anthropological study of mythology and how it effects life. These stories pop up everywhere in human history and in every culture. What we call the players is irrelavent; the drama remains the same.

But I digress.
