TCU beating Southern Miss put Nebraska in title game

The Clarion-Ledger

Nebraska owes its spot in this year's Bowl Championship Series title game in part to Southern Miss' failure to beat Texas Christian Friday night.

Nebraska edged Colorado by .05 points in the standings used to pick the two teams for the Rose Bowl. If USM had beaten TCU, Colorado would have finished .23 points ahead of Nebraska, says Jerry Palm, who runs a Web site devoted to calculating and explaining BCS rankings.

"I guess I need to start looking for that thank-you note from Nebraska," said USM coach Jeff Bower.

A factor in the BCS standings is strength of schedule, based on opponents' records and, to a lesser extent, on opponents' opponents' records.

Nebraska's schedule ranked 14th. Nebraska beat TCU 21-7 on Aug. 25. TCU beat USM 14-12.
