A group of 15 high school students from across Alabama – including three from Montgomery – departed today for the Republic of China (Taiwan) for a first hand taste of Mandarin language and Chinese culture, thanks to a special program offered through Alabama State University.

These high school students will travel to Taiwan as part of ASU’s Alabama Mandarin Language Immersion Program, said Dr. Huey-Ling Lin, an ASU associate professor and Mandarin program director.

“ASU’s Mandarin Language Immersion Program was made possible through a grant awarded to the university, and will provide these 15 Alabama high school students the chance to participate in six weeks of Mandarin language and culture classes at the National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei, the nation’s capitol,†Lin said.

The Montgomery students -- Shai Faulkner (an 11th grade student at LAMP); Nikki Miller (a 10th grade student at Brewbaker Magnet) and Trey Poppell (an 11th grade student at LAMP) -- departed from Montgomery Thursday, June 18, to Taipei, Taiwan’s capitol and largest city. While there, the students will enjoy excursions to cultural and historical sites, learn about Chinese culture and different perspectives on global issues, and experience many opportunities to interact with their Chinese mentors and peers as they study the Mandarin language.

“I am really excited about the chance to visit Asia and see firsthand what it’s like to visit a foreign country and live with a Chinese family,†said Shai Faulkner, a 16 year-old.

Faulkner said she has never been outside the U. S. before and hopes this is the first of many trips abroad for her.
