Jackson State

Out With the Old: After three unsuccessful seasons where the team sputtered and the fan base dissipated, James Bell was fired with three weeks remaining in the season on Oct. 29. Bell had a cumulative mark of 8-26 that included a pair of two-win campaigns.

In With the New: Rick Comegy fared pretty well against SWAC competition when he coached Tuskegee, and Jackson State hopes that success will continue as the coach of the Tigers. Comegy brings his 30 years of coaching experience to Jackson State after working at Tuskegee for the past 10 seasons. He directed Tuskegee to a 90-26 record that included four SIAC championships and five trips to the Pioneer Bowl since 1998.

Who?s Gone/Who?s Back: With upwards of 50 incoming recruits, including more than a dozen I-A or junior college transfers, playing time could be up for grabs in Jackson. With just six touchdowns and 15 interceptions from the quarterback position in 2005, junior college transfer Jimmy Oliver will have an excellent shot to come right in and play. Running back David Kennebrew (677 yards, 9 TD) teams with Mississippi transfer Jamal Pittman in the Tigers? backfield. Cornerback Cletis Gordon (4 INT) is the biggest loss on defense, but leading tackler Vincent Dancy (106 tackles) is back.

Level of Expectations: Jackson State has a rich football tradition that includes Walter Payton and Jackie Slater. More recently, the Tigers made the inaugural SWAC title game in 1999. At the very least, the Tigers and Comegy need to show the fan base they can compete with the likes of Grambling State and Southern in the SWAC West and get back to producing winning records overall. With games every year against usually poor teams like Prairie View, Texas Southern and Arkansas Pine-Bluff, the Tigers have plenty of realistic opportunities to add to the win column. Comegy will need to get the Tigers back above .500 in the very near future, and then show the program can get back to competing for, and sometimes playing for, the SWAC title.

Prognosis for Tenure: The Tigers will get back to their old ways in the SWAC. Jackson State has as many resources as anyone in the conference, and the Tigers now have a coach that has proven ability to win games. Jackson State has a great chance to make a rise this season with impact transfers and some talented players back, and should make the SWAC West a three-team race for the division in most seasons. Comegy figures to bring consistent winning seasons back to Jackson.

In some respects, it's awfully obvious that Dougherty doesn't do his research...J-State is NOT in the SWAC West

Maybe he has looked at the past Swac Championship Game winners, and realizes the SWAC Title is won in the West between Southern and Grambling.

Actually this dude does not know what he is talking about. He shoulda just asked the people in the barber shop, right JR?

BTW, Alcorn Valley ASU or A&M should be moved to the west. The west is such a weak division that either Gram or SU win by default. One of the other teams could at least make it a 3 team race.
