BATON ROUGE, La. -- A Southern University basketball player and two other men are accused of going into an unlocked apartment, holding the three occupants at gunpoint and robbing them.

Nicholas Egland, a 23-year-old senior, had been scheduled to graduate this Saturday. Instead, he remained in jail in lieu of $185,000 bond on Monday, five days after he and the other two were arrested.

Bond was set at $75,000 each for Joseph Lee Holmes, 22, and Jarmone Jerrell Smith, 21.

All three were booked Wednesday on one count each of aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary.

Fred Raiford of the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office said the men allegedly ordered the occupants to lie on the floor, then took a number of items.

When they left, a victim called the Sheriff's Office. Deputies already were at the apartment complex on an unrelated matter, and found two men matching the descriptions. The victims also identified some of the property found in the parking lot near the suspects' vehicle, Raiford said.

Raiford said one of the other suspects and a victim identified England in a six-photo lineup.

Egland, a native of Houston who went to Boston High School in Lake Charles, averaged 2.9 points and four rebounds in 16 games last year.

His arrest "is an unfortunate incident," sports spokesman Kevin Manns said. Other than that, he said, Southern will have no comment until courts are done with the case.

Even JRock and bluedog can't spin some of the craziness coming out of Scotlandville lately.

There's no attempt to spin... Egland was in it...but I'm hearing that one of the other in the three was the ringleader...And as we all know...if you're with the dudes robbin the joint..you're just as guilty as the ringleader

This one ain't on Southern...this one rest squarely with whomever committed the crime. I don't know if the young man is innocent or not but it's a bad situation.

This is the saddest part of the entire story. :smh:

2.9 points per game? Wasn't he freshman of the year a few years back?

The ring leader was one of Coach Grant recruits that had no business attending SU   . The kids previous coach told Grant that he wouldn't recommend the kid to anyone, because the kid was a problem child, but genius :smh: took him anyway  .

it worked out for one of your other star players...the precedent was set...

but Holmes had other issues :retard: as to why he was kicked off

Egland got hurt in 2003 I think....ACL tear...he was never the same player after that

You know, this is systemic and not isolated...nevermind.

I agree C-Leb and C-Diddy, the most frustrating part is he was a week away from graduating, obtaining his degree and continuing on with his life. The "street committee" is saying all kinds of things, but mostly that it is not shocking that he got into this. No matter how old you are, you have to be careful about who you run with.

Yes he was...

England, the Louisiana Association of Basketball Coaches' Class 3A Player of the Year while a senior at Lake Charles-Boston High School in 2000, was the 2001-02 Southwestern Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year.

England also made the All-SWAC second team that season as he averaged 10.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. England injured an Achilles' tendon in the first game of the next season, an injury that made him miss the rest of the season.

If he wasn't holding the gun, or driving the car, he arse better cut a deal while he still can (providing he doesn't have any priors). I'm not saying that he's innocent of anything, but it's really sad when you're a week away from graduating, and to be caught up in something dumb. Knowingly, or negligent.

To throw you future away for a few measily dollars, is..........

NICE

I preach to my students ALL the time about the choices they make, and THINKING about their actions ...

This is a DAMNED SHAME ... :shame:

These are "aggravated" offenses. They better try to get a plea deal whether they feel they are guilty or not.

I JUST saw with my own eyes how the presence of a gun (whether the accuser knows it is there or not) makes a world of difference in conviction and sentencing. I have a cousin who had NO priors and really no concrete physical evidence against him get sentenced to 7 years in prison for a domestic dispute because he is KNOWN to carry a gun (LEGALLY). Sad thing is that he was still seeing the accuser before he was convicted...and she couldn't do anything about it (state followed through with the charges).

I remember a few posters on the Meac board saying that Grant shouldn't have taken him because he was a head job. :smh: :smh:
