Egland was scheduled to graduate SaturdayAssociated Press
BATON ROUGE, La. -- A Southern University basketball player and two other men are accused of going into an unlocked apartment, holding the three occupants at gunpoint and robbing them.
Nicholas Egland, a 23-year-old senior, had been scheduled to graduate this Saturday. Instead, he remained in jail in lieu of $185,000 bond on Monday, five days after he and the other two were arrested.
Bond was set at $75,000 each for Joseph Lee Holmes, 22, and Jarmone Jerrell Smith, 21.
All three were booked Wednesday on one count each of aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary.
Fred Raiford of the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office said the men allegedly ordered the occupants to lie on the floor, then took a number of items.
When they left, a victim called the Sheriff's Office. Deputies already were at the apartment complex on an unrelated matter, and found two men matching the descriptions. The victims also identified some of the property found in the parking lot near the suspects' vehicle, Raiford said.
Raiford said one of the other suspects and a victim identified England in a six-photo lineup.
Egland, a native of Houston who went to Boston High School in Lake Charles, averaged 2.9 points and four rebounds in 16 games last year.
His arrest "is an unfortunate incident," sports spokesman Kevin Manns said. Other than that, he said, Southern will have no comment until courts are done with the case.
