Shamia Jones, Lady Hornets Run To 2024 SWAC Cross Country Title

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. | Shamia Jones and Alabama State University captured the 2024 Southwestern Athletic Conference Women's Cross Country title Monday at Apalachee Regional Park.

The team title gave Alabama State Head Coach Ritchie Beene his 60th SWAC title in Cross Country and Track and Field while Beene was also named to the SWAC Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year.

Jones, who earned SWAC Runner of the Year Honors, ran a 19:16.3 to edge out Florida A&M's Tara Hart's 1920.9 for the individual title leading four Lady Hornets in the top 10.

Aliyah Williams clocked a 19:22.2 for third place just two seconds behind the runner-up, Bert. Taliah Wickett claimed fourth place with a 19:23.0 and Angelique Degboe was 10th with a 19:54.6.

Williams and Wickett earned SWAC First-Team honors while Degboe was named to the All-SWAC Second-Team.

Selket Reid El placed 31st (21:49.3) and Alisha Boyer was 37th (22.12.1) to round out the ASU individuals.

The Lady Hornets total 47 points to edge out host Florida A&M with 49 points. Prairie View was third with 86 points followed by Alabama A&M (94), Southern (155), and Arkansas-Pine Bluff (164).
