One late night in early 96, I was channel surfing and caught something on the ole Sports South Channel called Extreme Championship Wrestling. I had heard about them and had a video tape when they were known as Eastern Championship Wresting a few years earlier. ECW was a breath of fresh air for me as a wrestling fan as I had despised what WCW had become and what the WWF/WWE was. None of the old territories from the 80s, 70s, and beyond that those Apter magazines profiled were around. The highlight for me was of course Sabu and his backflips and leg drops to his opponents on those tables as the crowded kept chanting, "ECW, ECW, ECW."
As ECW closed its doors and blended in with the WWE, so did my overall interest in wrestling. I mean, I've tried to give it a watch from time to time. I just can't flow with it.
Anyhow, Sabu was very entertaining. I think I remember him going against 50 something year old Terry Funk.
I figured all those amazing physical efforts would come back at some point in his life healthwise. Much respect...!
