A prominent NFL owner announced on Monday morning a generous $50 million donation to HBCUs.

HBCUs, historically black universities and colleges, are very prominent in the state of Georgia. Many of the country's top HBCUs are located in the state. On Monday, Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank announced that his foundation would be donating $50 million to scholarships for HBCUs.

The $50 million will support roughly 10,000 students. The scholarships are aimed at helping close the financial aid gaps that might otherwise prevent students from finishing their degrees.

The donation was announced by The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation. The $50 million will go toward four schools in the Atlanta area - Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Morris Brown College and Spelman College, according to the foundation’s announcement.

“These grants are a material investment in hope,” said Fay Twersky, the foundation’s president.

Blank, the co-founder of Home Depot, has a net worth of greater than $10 billion. He became the owner of the Atlanta Falcons in 2001. Blank has committed to giving away at least half of his wealth, by signing the Giving Pledge. His family foundation has already donated more than $1.5 billion to date.

It's their biggest donation yet to HBCUs in the area.

“Our hope is that by helping more students earn their degrees, launch successful careers and become alumni who give back, we are investing in a cycle of opportunity that benefits young people and their families in Atlanta and communities across the nation for years to come,” the foundation said.

Dr. F. DuBois Bowman, the president of Morehouse College, is thrilled.
