Lady Tigers Play Grambling State for SWAC Top Spot

The Lady Tiger Volleyball team had a very exciting game last night defeating the Panthers of Prairie View 3-2 in a five game nail biter avenging a loss last week against the Panthers which gave the Tigers their first and only conference loss of the season. The loss was the first conference loss of the season for PV and set up this Saturday's game as a matchup for first place as the Tigers take on Grambling who is undeafeted in conference play.

The Tigers came out sluggish giving up eight straight points. The TSU would later lose that game by the score of 30-15. The Tigers were without freshman phenom Lakenya Wrightsil who is still recoving from the flu and who sat out the entire first game.

The next game the Tigers would again trail PV before roaring back. The Tigers on the strength of their defense held the Panthers to only 15 points as Wrightsil, Tina Otum and Monique Thomas stuffed the lady Panthers kill attempts forcing them to commit seven errors. The Tigers would win that game 30-15.

In the third game the Tigers looked inspired as they outscored the lady Panther 30-21. In the game the Lady Tigers had 20 kills and only two errors and looked as though they would take the match in four games.

Prairie View being 4-0 in conference play, coming into the game, would not go easy and won the fourth game 30-21. As the fourth game ended the excitement was in the the air. The Tigers were anxious to get the win against PV a team they had not beaten since 2002.

In the fifth and final game, things did not good early for the Tigers as the Panthers jumped out to a 2-4 lead. The young Tigers looked to their senior outside hitter Thomas for leadership and she did not disappoint them leading team in the match with 13 kills. Later in the game PV would take a 6-10 lead and between every point the tense audience was relativly silent, but errupted after every TSU point as the Tigers tied the game 14-14 in a game to fifteen. The TSU offense quarterbacked by sophmore Shawdae Wallce who 32 assists and 10 kills in the game helped the Tigers pull out the victory.

The Tigers will take on Grambling State for first place in the SWAC this Saturday in a double-header the first match starts at 11 am while the second match starts 1 pm.

they need to emphasize SWAC WEST.... NOT first place in the SWAC. We blanked TxSo 3-0 in Baton Rouge
