JSU fullback slashed in Jacksonville dance club
Associated Press
JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - Jacksonville State University's starting fullback has a split ear and a slashed throat from an incident in a dance club.
Police said Raynodd Lewis Zeine, 21, was slashed with a broken beer bottle by a man inside the Cock Diesel Dance Club.
Robert Harris Davis, 19, another JSU student, also was assaulted, police said, but his injuries didn't require hospital care.
Zeine, of Prichard, who has played for Jacksonville State for three years, was treated at Jacksonville Hospital about 1:10 a.m. Friday for a 6-inch-long gash to his throat.
"Doctors said that the cut on his neck could have killed him," Assistant Chief Bill Wineman of the Jacksonville Police Department said of Zeine. "One centimeter more and the bottle would have pierced his jugular vein."
Zeine was near the club's stage, police said, when a man for unknown reasons struck Zeine during a disturbance involving a crowd of people.
There were no immediate arrests.
JSU Coach Jack Crowe on Friday made the Cock Diesel off limits to his players and visited Zeine.
He said the player "looked good" and was "very apologetic" regarding the incident. Crowe expects him to return to the team in the fall.
