Jackson State vs Central State in the 1980s

THE Logical ONE

HBCU sports had some great topics back in the day. This thread just so happened to pop up in a search I was doing. Its a great read for those interested. The comments were locked so I am making a new thread about it.

One of the biggest debates in the history of HBCU football is HOW JSU dominated the SWAC from 1980-1990, but we only have ONE national championship. I would love to compare those JSU teams and the Central State teams back in the late 80s. Also, I even recall back in 1996 when JSU finished the season at #1, FAMU was #2, and Howard was #3. JSU and FAMU were both penalized for participating in the playoffs, and Sheridan attempted to name Howard as the HBCU champions. Thank goodness there were other polls around that stopped that foolishness. And the funny thing is that we played Howard the next year and beat them. The Sheridan Poll always seemed to have an East Coast bias. Although Central State is not on the East Coast, I would love to see how, in all those years, JSU was never #1.

I would love to know the criteria of the past championships.
That is a good question and it seems that there was not a single entity or governing body that decided on a Black National Champion. One would think it would be based on the wins and loss against HBCU schools in that particular season and have some sort of tie breaker system for teams that finish with the same records.

So folks been bragging on national championships all these years that ain’t even real? What’s the point of that?

I’ve always said that. There hasn’t been a game or anything deciding it. Just based off opinions. No disrespect but when i saw FAMU claiming a championship from a 7-4 season, i already knew what it was.

Yea I ain’t going for that made up bs, I don’t care what these folks say. It’s safe to say the CB is the actual championship now, so if you don’t have a trophy from one, none of this other shit even matters which is only two SWAC schools and 3 others.

Man, we did whole thread on FAMUs made up National titles. It's at least 7 or 8 of them. 🤣

Central State used to put them hands on folks. I also remember JSU winning the SWAC in 1996. That was the year he beat the breaks off y'all azz in Bham so technically we are the SWAC champs for 96...... 😂 That's how FAMU claims titles.

Same thing happened to Alcorn in 1992.
Steve Air McNair led the Braves to an undefeated SWAC record but the Sheridan poll awarded Grambling as the HBCU national champion because Alcorn opted for the playoffs and Grambling went to the Heritage Bowl.

The Braves now have 5 after the 2014 season. The last year before the Celebration Bowl kicked off.

That was actually 1995 when y'all beat us in the Classic. We played yall there in 94 and 95. We played BAMA Jelly there in 1997 and 1998... and it was a one point upset BUT I agree, it you lose to lowly AAMU by even a point, you got ya azz beat and need to be shame! LOL

Nah.. FAMU would lose to a team and STILL claim a title. lol Im telling you, we had a whole thread on it. There is a list somewhere. It would be like FAMU went 8-3; PV went 10-1 and beat FAMU but FAMU still claimed title... LOL There were about 7 examples JUST like that! JUST THAT BAD and JUST THAT OBVIOUS. lol

They didn't consider the strength of schedule at ALL. 🤣 In 1987, no team in BCF was touching JSU but we had a tough schedule and lost 3 CLOSE games to top PWIs including USM. Central State would have got beat 50-0 by the same teams.

I agree to a certain extent because technically, the CB cant name the HBCU champ with TNState, A&T and Hampton out there. If either of those make a playoff run, win their conference and beat all the HBCUs on their schedule, I think they should be AT LEAST considered. In fact, last year I think the best two HBCU teams were JSU and TNState. Wouldnt that have been epic in ATL!

Its good to have a CB bowl because without it, Im sure Alcorn would have been named HBCU Champs in those years where A&T beat them and probably justifiably so. A&T was losing to NCCU and teams like Morgan State in the regular season. But the CB clearly put the best two teams in the game those years and let them settle it on the field.

My ONLY gripe with it was 2001. JSU and FAMU were CLEARLY the best two teams. SCState had no business being there and CB win or not, I personally dont think you can be HBCU National champs and you lost to 3-4 HBCUs. That year, JSU and FAMU both had 1 HBCU loss. The next best teams were PV, AAMU, and SCState. To me, MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE 🤣, the CB champ and HBCU champ are two different things BUT, coincidentally, in 7 or 8 of the 9 years, the best two teams have played in it. SCState did beat our azz tho so I guess we just gotta live with it. 🤣

I don't for a second believe those Central state teams were better than JSU all those years.

Yall thorn in the side back then was Tenn State. Just like NCAT was a thorn in Alcorn recently

I agree. From 86-90, we were 1-2-2 vs TNState.

Central State was whipping everyone back then. 😂
Central State was kicking azz. D2 and NAIA azz! Let's just leave it at that. 🤣 🤣 They only played TNState and FAMU and a bunch of scrubs. TNState was pretty good but FAMU was not. Central State was a DOG among their NAIA peers. I give you that but if they had to play 7 or 8 tough opponents, Im not sure how that would have worked out for them.

For example, look at this sorry ahh schedule. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1986_Central_State_Marauders_football_team#cite_note-9

The only D1 they played was FAMU and FAMU was 5-6 that year. They tied with AAMU but AAMU was D2 and was only 4-3-1 when they played. Central State was 8-0. If you look at all their schedules, it was full of fluff.

Now TP you can convince these young folks but I was there in the late 80's and early 90's. There was talent in all of HBCU football and On any given day every one was getting wrecked. 😂

Your kidding right!

There was talent but you not gonna sit here and try to convince me or anybody that Central State could have played JSUs schedule and survived. They were some DOGS. Im NOT denying that but they were doing what TU did during the Comegy era. Comegy learned from Billy Joe. They knew they only had to beat AlaState and they did. They had kids in schools who were 25 years old and only enrolled during football season.. lol If they couldnt beat a sorry AAMU, you know they would have got drug by J-State.

Tennessee State should have won it in 1986. Look at TNState schedule and then look at Central State's sorry ahh schedule. They need to go back and take all them titles. TNState should have won in 86, JSU in 87 and 88. JSU was 8-0-2 regular season in 88. And we would have drug Central State. 1989 is harder to call but it wouldnt have been Central State. lol I would probably go with Grambling. 1990 is murky too BUT it wouldnt have been Central State! FAMU and JSU won the MEAC and SWAC but A&T and AlaState had better records. In fact, A&T was named co-national champ with CSU and FAMU won the conference. Weird.

Yet we kicked JSU but in D2 and you barely beat us the next time. 😂 Now I do agree with you about the. Old dudes at Central State. Remember that QB they had was 27 😂

That does not make sense punishing Alcorn for going into the playoffs over the Heritage Bowl.

FAMU created this problem by not taking care of business off the field. Also, SC State got strip of some of their regular season wins during the season that they beat a Coach Prime JSU team because of playing eligible players.

I agree that their need to be some type of authority over naming a HBCU National Championship and guidelines. A day will come that a HBCU will win the FCS Playoffs and have a better record than the Celebration Bowl Winners.
