How is it an assassination attempt if no weapon was fired?

The first attempt at his life I believed was real. This second incident, I think is staged. He's trying to use the threats as a way to gain empathy from his supporters.

An assassination attempt does not necessarily require a weapon to be fired. It can be characterized by the intent and actions leading up to the potential harm, even if the actual act is not completed. In the case of Trump, the presence of a suspect with a weapon in proximity to him or the Secret Service could be considered an attempt.
