Alamerica Bank to sponsor SWAC championship game

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- The Dec. 14 Southwestern Athletic Conference championship football game has a new sponsor -- the Birmingham-based Alamerica Bank.

Bank chairman Donald Watkins, known for his efforts to become the first black owner of a Major League baseball team, said the game will be televised on Black Entertainment Television, giving the bank some national exposure as it expands.

Alamerica Bank will pay about $100,000 to replace HealthSouth as title sponsor, according to Thursday's announcement. Alamerica signed a one-year deal, but Watkins said he has the right to extend its contract as title sponsor "if it's mutually beneficial."

Watkins' father, Levi Watkins, was president of Alabama State University in Montgomery, a SWAC member, from 1962-1981.

Alamerica BancCorp is a holding company Watkins formed earlier this year.

What difference does it make. We have a championship game that does not reward anything. There is no bowl game for us. We basically should just do away with this championship game and go back to trying to compete on a national level. Winning the SWAC means nothing anymore. At least we use to play to try and make the playoffs. Now what do we play for. No one cares who won the SWAC title.

The people that work hard in the off-season and make it to the SCG and get those beautiful SWAC Championship rings do... That's all that matters... Oh if you haven't seen one in a while, just go west on I-20 for about 130 miles and ask any of the players that have been there the last couple of years to see theirs. Oh while you're there ask them if they want to cancel the SCG... :)

P.S. I'm not smacking just stating the facts...
