Grambling celebrates Centennial Founder's Day

GRAMBLING - Thomas N. Todd, a Chicago-based lawyer, will be guest speaker for the Grambling State University Centennial Founder's Day convocation to be held at 6 p.m. Sunday in T.H. Harris Auditorium.

The convocation is the culminating activity for the university's Centennial Founder's Week observation which started Sunday. The theme of the week is "Grambling State University 1901-2001: a Founder's Dream Unfolded."

Todd has spoken for various organizations and institutions throughout the nation and in Africa and Mexico, with much of the emphasis based on civil rights and education.

He also has conducted affirmative action seminars for various corporations and has held other positions that reflect his involvement with the Civil Rights Movement.

Todd was president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference's Chicago chapter in 1971, executive vice president of Operation PUSH and president of PUSH from 1983-84.

He was the first full-time black law professor at Northwestern University School of Law. He taught from 1970-74.

Todd has been admitted to many bars and courts, including the U.S., Louisiana and Illinois supreme courts and the U.S. Court of Military Appeals. Honorary doctorates Todd has received include those from Grambling State, Syracuse, Wilberforce and Southern universities, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Talladega College and Bethune-Cookman College this year.

He is the recipient of more than 500 awards and honors and has appeared on radio and television programs throughout the country.

Todd has written articles that have been published in Dollars and Sense magazine, Southern University Law Review and the School Board News.

Born in Demopolis, Ala., Todd attended Central High School in Mobile, Ala. He entered Southern University in Baton Rouge in 1955 and received a bachelor of arts degree in political science, graduating magna cum laude from Southern's law school in 1963.

Todd is married to Janis Roberts. They have two children, Tamara Nicole and Traci Neuborne.

Tuesday

9:30 to 10:50 a.m.: "Conversations under the Tent: the Grambling Legacy," quadrangle.

7 to 8 p.m.: Forum III: "Grambling State University, the First 100 Years: Where Do We Go from Here?" T.L. James Auditorium.

Wednesday

11:30 a.m.: Emeritus faculty luncheon, host is acting President Neari Francois Warner, the president's home.

7 to 8 p.m.: Forum IV: "Grambling State University, the First 100 Years: Where Do We Go from Here?" T.L. James Auditorium.

Thursday

9 a.m. to 4 p.m.: GSU Authors Fair, A.C. Lewis Memorial Library lobby.

Friday

9 a.m.: Laboratory schools' Founder's Week program, T.H. Harris Auditorium.

Sunday

6 p.m.: Centennial Founder's Day convocation with guest speaker Thomas N. Todd, T.H. Harris Auditorium. Centennial Founder's Week reception immediately following convocation, Black and Gold Room in Favrot Student Union.

I've never heard Thomas Todd speak, but I heard that he is a dynamic speaker. Homecoming 2001 is going to be a weekend of sin for many.
