Grambling's Ellis retires after 43 years of service

GRAMBLING, La. ? Longtime baseball coach and assistant athletic director Wilbert Ellis will be honored during a retirement banquet at the Black and Gold Room of the Favrot Student Union on Grambling State?s campus on Friday, November 21, 2003 at 7 p.m. The cost for this event is $20.00 per person and tickets can be purchased at the ticket office in the Athletic Complex on campus.

Ellis has served as a guiding force for the Grambling State athletic department always steeping in to fill whatever role is needed to help the sports programs or the university as a whole for over 43 years.

Ellis has been the head baseball coach of the Tigers since 1977 and got off to a strong start during his first season in 1978 when the G-Men put up a 32-19 record and his pitching staff finished second nationally with a 2.33 earned run average.

Over the past 26 seasons, Ellis has led the Tigers to three SWAC titles along with earning three trips to the NCAA tournament. His Grambling State squads have also captured five Western Division titles during this span.

Only the second head baseball coach in Grambling State history, Ellis served 17 years as an assistant under university president/baseball coach (and former football coach) R.W.E. Jones before taking over the program as head coach.

A native of Ruston, Louisiana, Ellis was promoted to the rank of assistant athletic director at Grambling State in August 1989 and was later promoted to associate athletic director. He also served as the university?s interim athletic director from September 1996 to January 1997.
