Division I conference commissioners working to move up December signing period

“The biggest reason we’re doing this is to clear up the football recruiting calendar so the signing period and the transfer portal don’t overlap,” Big Sky commissioner Tom Wistrcill, who chairs the CCA's NLI committee, told The Athletic. “The feedback we’ve received from all coaches is that December is a mess. Especially with the expansion of the CFP coming next year, that just creates more chaos in December. This should help.”

The CCA also discussed the possibility of adding a third signing date, which would actually be the first on the calendar: in June or August.

College football's early signing period moves up a week before conference championship game.

The Collegiate Commissioners Association, announced the change Friday.

The start of the traditional signing period will remain on the first Wednesday of February and continue to run through April 1. The three-day early signing period will now start the Wednesday after Thanksgiving weekend, when the major college football regular season ends.

The new early signing period would end before the transfer windows open.

The commissioners also said it is still considering a proposal to add a third signing period for college football in June, starting in 2025. A decision will be made by this June, the CCA's new release said.
