A black college classic and the first home night game in Delaware State history highlight the Hornets' 2006 football schedule, announced Friday by athletic director Chuck Bell.
DSU will begin the season with the Detroit Football Classic, Sept. 2 at Ford Field, home of the NFL's Detroit Lions. The Hornets will play fellow Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference member Florida A&M.
"That's going to be huge for visibility, recruiting-wise and financially," Bell said.
Bell said the Hornets were willing to change what was to be a home game against FAMU for the Detroit Classic because they will earn a $100,000 guarantee. DSU's cheerleaders and marching band also will make the trip to the Hornets' first black college classic game since 2001.
DSU, which installed lights at Alumni Stadium last fall, will play its first home night game Sept. 9 against St. Francis (Pa.), with the time to be determined. A second home night game will be Sept. 23 against Hampton.
The Hornets, who were 7-4 last season under second-year coach Al Lavan, will play two other nonconference games: at Northwestern (La.) State on Sept. 16 and at home against Concord, an NCAA Division II team from Athens, W. Va., on Nov. 4.
