You need to catch an SU game. In fact when we play LSU @ Lee Hines(SU home field) if you are not there early(1:30 before first pitch) you won't get a seat. The band comes out , fans tailgate and everything. You would swear you were at a football game. College baseball is very, very, very exciting especially if you have a quality team full of athletes like SU has had over the last couple of season. In fact I will even say SU had the most athletic team in the nation 2001-2004. If we could ever get top flight pitching the swac could dominate college baseball with their athletes. You don't know the feeling I had when we beat Southern Miss. in that regional(with Dewan Day pitching a 1 hitter, and Rickie smashing the game winning homer over the fence), or when we beat LSU over the last couple of season. This is the only sport where we are able to get top flight black recruits away from PWC's because they don't even want them. Baseball is a sport where the swac could seriously make some noise in the NCAA tournament. Hell we already have.
S when LSU came to Hines. I was late I had to watch the game behind the fence sitting on my truck. DAHILL the atmosphere is so good, and now that SU has restrooms, and consessions, and all that look for every home game to be in great shape!!

The move to Jackson is a good one for no other reason than if SU, JSU, Alcorn, or Valley advance, it is not to far for fans to make a "same day" last minute trip to see it. Birmingham is to far.

As far as baseball being boring, i total understand the game and it is the most boring of the 3 major sports by far. You can tailgate the whole game and not miss much. The players spend more time running on and off the field and warming up than actually playing, watching the pitcher and catcher play catch till the batter eventually hits the ball. I understand all of the strategy but it's still kinda boring. But I go to a few games a year and if the tourny is in Jacktown, and Southern makes it, I will probably be there.

This is always the response from those that just don't like the game. For those of us that do understand the game it is very exciting. When you can watch how a pitcher goes at a batter with all the different pitches. How a batter goes at the pitcher, how the defense sets up against each batter. When men are on base and they attack the next base, based on the hit, the pitchers release and the defense. Baseball is like a chest match, there are so many things going on on both sides of the field. I'm getting so excited just typing this, can't wait till the season starts. Hopefully I get the chance to be a assistant on my sons team again this year. Even in the select baseball competition is high, I do wish there were more blacks playing at his level. I know that it is very hard and expensive to compete at that level but MLB needs to help the inner city get back to playing becuase they are missing out on some very talented athletes.

you cant tell me I dont understand... I played baseball from age 5 to 18.... I liked to PLAY baseball.... just never really liked watching it. Practice was even boring... I just liked to play on gameday. Some people can, but I cant sit and watch baseball on television like I can football and basketball. I played on a team with 2 players now playing professional baseball (one was a star at SU [Franco Blackburn] )

I still would like volleyball... its more action than baseball.... I like seeing players get spiked on... Baseball like soccer is a WAIT for action sport.

Lewis, that's the hope I have for success for this tourney. The WEST is where the strength is in baseball, and if one of those teams makes it to the final, it is easier to make the drive from many of the locations of these schools at the last minute. Last year, had the game not been all the way in B-Ham, I probably would have been able to drive in after work on Friday or early Saturday morning.

Personally, baseball is my favorite sport (not by much, but it is). So watching a game is not a big deal to me. But to others, it is much too slow of a game. And now that I am coaching the game as well, I am learning aspects of the game that 15 years of playing never taught me. It's a thinking man's game, but one that is slower and requires more precision.

too many folks only see this "I" word. You are one person in the SWAC there are many other swac fans. Everybody wants a tournament where THEY can get to easily.

Those who see baseball as boring really don't watch it or don't know the game well enough to know all that is going on during the game. They are probably the same type of people that don't like the NBA finals having teams like Detroit, San Antonio, New Jersey, etc... playing in it (saying it is boring and slow and not appreciating all of the defense). And that's cool...

Nah, that ain't cool ZN.

These are the type of people who are "individualistic" in nature and care about how good they or whomever looks when playing even though they would've lost a game. lol Reminds me of that line in White Men Can't Jump that Woody Harrelson stated about "brothers" and that backwards thinking (can't spell team w/out the "I look good isht" ).

Have no appreciation for true athleticism or competition.

AAMU has won NATIONAL championships in soccer, and I still cant watch the sport. I TRIED several times to go to AAMU soccer games and end up leaving because IMO the sport is BORING.

LOL, I agree with that. Soccer is Cross Country with a ball. 90 minutes and the score is 2-1. Soccer would be a lot more exciting if they let them wear steel toed cleats.

I'm with you regarding more blacks are needed playing select baseball. Since my son has been playing, I think he has been the only black with the exception of one season. In our city league, I watched all of the teams play at his age to see if it would be a chance to pull an all black team together. There may have been 7 blacks total in his league at his age. The best I could hope for was a minority team (blacks and hispanics)... SMH... We occassionally take him to one of the area high school coaches for batting lessons. He once told us, once he noticed how good he was geting, to please don't let the pressure of his friends or ourselves push him away from baseball to another sport (football or basketball). He stated for years he had seen our kids play the sport early with a few really excelling at it, only to have them give it up no later than high school to start playing football or basketball and not get a scholarship just to play what their friends are playing or something like that. So, it sounds like even in the areas where our kids play young that they end up leaving the sport because blacks don't attend the games and support our youth playing the game. Black and white coaches encourage them to play football and basketball, where we don't have black coaches (to speak of) encouraging them to play or stay in baseball. Like music, baseball can be pretty challenging to start in or around the age for high school and compete for very few positions with kids that have been playing since at least 10. SU had a WR that actually picked it up at SU and did so well (especially defensively) until he was drafted and he didn't play his last football season. He is a rare exception.

Which league does your son play in? JR and I have a frat brother in the Houston area, who's son plays on his select team. His son, however, is now in high school.

Peace...
