Alcorn seeks 1st win since '99 season

The Associated Press

It's been almost two years since Alcorn State won. Starting this season against the Southwestern Athletic Conference champion will make breaking its 17-game losing streak today a difficult task.

Both Alcorn's Johnny Thomas and Grambling's Doug Williams returned to coach their alma maters four years ago. The results have been drastically different.

Williams is 22-11 in three seasons since taking over from the esteemed Eddie Robinson. The Tigers went 10-2 last season.

Thomas is 8-24 in his three seasons. The Braves, 0-11, hit rock bottom last season, going winless for the first time in 42 years, including a 29-6 loss at Grambling.

Thomas said the Braves need to be fundamentally sound and avoid turnovers and penalties.

Tonight's game at Lorman begins at 6:30.

The Delta Devils open the season against the SWAC's best rushing team. Last season's meeting resulted in a Golden Lions blowout, 40-7.

The Delta Devils will unveil their new West Coast offense, led by senior quarterback Rob Harding.
