November 16, 2003

Alabama State vaults to the lead of the SWAC East division race with their win over Miss. Valley State and Alcorn State?s win over Alabama A&M. Although Alcorn State and Alabama State are tied with a 4-2 record, Alabama State hold the first tie-breaker over Alcorn State by virtue of their victory over the Braves (see below). Alabama A&M loses the tie-breaker scenarios in the event of a three-way tie for the East division title.

Southern got all they all they could handle at Texas Southern, before pulling out late game coup on Lenny Williams 82 yd punt return TD. Grambling State QB Bruce Eugene set new career passing records and Prairie View A&M finished their season at Southeastern Louisiana.

If so, someone please explain tiebreakers involving 3 teams.
Yeah, please explain how A&M is eliminated. I thought A&M would win in a 3 way tie.

Mighty Hornet, I was thinking the same thing. Anyway here is the tie-breaker scenario that someone posted on another thread.

SWAC Football Divisional Tiebreakers
In the event of a tie for the divisional championship, the following procedures will be used:

1) Two-team ties:

a. Head-to-Head competition

2) Ties involving three or more teams:

a. Record in games played among the teams locked in a tie;

b. Record in games played in that division ONLY;

c. Scoring margin in games played among the teams locked in a tie;

d. Scoring margin in games played in that division ONLY;

e. Overall record;

f. Coin toss by the commissioner

Rob....I'm STILL thinking that. :smh:

True, our chances are extremely slim, but should Bama State and Alcorn lose, I thought we were still right there.

Exactly, A&M would win in a 3 way tiebreaker because if Alcorn lose to JSU that would give them 2 losses in the East (to Bama State and JSU) and leave Bama State and A&M with 1 loss in the East.
With Alcorn eliminated, ASU and A&M would be the 2 teams tied and A&M won head to head.

But all of this talk here is much ado about nothing. The HORNETS will make sure of that.
:D

This just shows that we have idiots in the SWAC office because if TxSo beats BAMA Jelly (JSU is gonna horse whip Alcorn), AAMU will still go by virtue of 2b.

but then again, maybe if they start out going on the rules of a 3 way tie, they follow those rules through, until a winner emerges based on those rules alone. If so, Bama State would win a 3 way tie, rule 2c. Bama State over Alcorn by 21. A&M over Bama State by 3. Alcorn over A&M by 5

Fellas,

I just figured it out.

Looking at the tie-breaker rules above, if Bama State and Alcorn BOTH lose this coming weekend, Bama State would win the East.

Here's why.

If both of us lose this weekend, there would be a three-way tie. Look carefully at the tie-breakers. The first scenario in the three-way tie-breaker does not work because Bama State beat Alcorn, Alcorn beat A&M and A&M beat Bama State.

The second tie-breaker does not work, because A&M has one East conference loss and Bama State has one East conference loss.

NOTE: Remember, once you go to a three-way tie, the two-way tie-breaker is ELIMINATED.

The third tie-breaker is the one. (scoring margin played in games among the teams locked in a tie) . A&M beat Bama State by 3. Alcorn beat A&M by 5. Bama State beat Alcorn by 21 ! ! ! !

There it is.

If Bama State and Alcorn both lose, then Bama State goes to the SCG ! ! !

So If Alcorn and Bama St. win....this is what will happen right?

If Alcorn wins, Bama St. doesn't...Bama St. is out, right?

and I understand that if both lose Bama St. goes...

Jayson,

Here's the deal.

Its over for A&M. Its now between Bama State and Alcorn.

If Bama State wins, we go to the SCG regardless of what Alcorn does. If Bama State loses, and Alcorn wins, they go to the SCG.

If both Bama State AND Alcorn win, then Bama State goes to the SCG. If both Bama State AND Alcorn lose, then Bama State STILL goes to the SCG.

At least that is the way I see it.

Remember, this is the SWAC, and ANYTHING can happen.

Who knows, they may change the rules Friday night, and Jackson State may go to the SCG, LOL ! ! !

This might need to be clarified before Saturday because if not, we as a conference will look real stupid. If you go in order then yes, Alabama State wins either wa BUT I don't think that is what they really mean...then again, the SWAC office wrote the article so maybe AAMU is officially out.

TP,

I agree.

As I said earlier, this is the SWAC, and ain't no tellin' what they might do.

I wonder if A&M folks knew before last Saturday that a loss to Alcorn (and a Bama State win over Valley) would TOTALLY ELIMINATE them. :eek2:

I don't think they did. :emlaugh:

I didn't. :lol:

The Alcorn commentators did not explain it that way either. They used the head to head scenerio with AAMU still being alive.

so it's possible for Bama State to have won the East even before taking the field against TxSou.

Yes, it is possible MH. The Alcorn-JSU game kicks off at 1:30 and should be over with by 4:30 or 5. You all will know what you have to do by the time you all kick off at 7.
Alcorn wins, you all have to win to go to Birmingham. Alcorn loses, you all are going to Birmingham regardless of the outcome of your game with Texas Southern.

Good point....I really believe that it reverts back to head to head after each 3-way tie scenerio. WHy wouldn't it??
