SU cancels its home game against FAMU on September 12th citing covid19 safety concerns, and today JSU reports it will host FAMU football on that same date? As it relates to safety concerns during these unusual times, it just seems to me that the SWAC, as a conference, should be on one accord. I could see this being a problem when the 2021 season rolls around.

That game in BR was a loser from a revenue perspective with the social distancing guidelines and stadium capacity. The number of fans allowed was not sufficient to cover the cost of operation, this is not a mandatory conference game so it didn’t make sense financially. Your AD didn’t tell the entire story why the game was canceled! This is a business... SU’s AD want to ensure he gets the return on investment as FAMU got so the game will be rescheduled.

Thank you for your analysis! College football is, as are all college sports, indeed a business! Mumford Stadium in BR seats 28,500. With social distancing guidelines in place, only about 7000 would be allowed entry. Conversely, Mississippi Memorial Stadium seats about 60,000, and, with social distancing guidelines, fewer than 15,000 would be accomodated. Assuming a hefty guarantee to FAMU, together with additional expenses associated with covid19, will this non-conference game not be a loser also from a revenue perspective? I just hope our schools, including JSU, dont put our kids at risk in the interest of padding their budgets. We've learned in just the last day or so that Houston/Harris County, home to two of our sister conference schools, could become the new center of the pandemic, even surpassing NYC, when this all first started. Do you think those Texas schools are interested in playing football right now? Even Florida, home to FAMU, is seeing upwards of 7000 infections per day. New York State, returning the favor, is now requiring persons entering the state from Florida and Texas to quarantine for 14 days. The health and safety of our students, as Southern's AD, Roman Banks has so aptly noted, should be our first and foremost concern.

Earle, our projected capacity for this season is between 20 & 30K depending on which recommendation the Governor rules is an acceptable threshold for stadiums statewide. It has been tossed around numbers from 40% and as great as 50% of capacity would be acceptable, but we are operating on somewhere in the middle as an assumption. There is no universal guideline as to how states will proceed. The CDC has suggestions but they are just that suggestions.

They know that. Everyone is so concerned about safety but where are the letters, petitions and phone calls to the swac office demanding a cancellation of season 2020. All this concern over one game & their schools got a whole conference scheduled lined up. Not to mention the ones who running the streets to pimp their players for a check (bka “money game”).

Jackson's mayor said at the press conference today announcing the FAMU game, that he made a deal with Mayor Sharon Broome of BR during last season's SU-JSU contest, that each would wear the spirit shirt of the winning team. So, we know what shirt he had to wear. He asked JSU's coach to ensure that he won't have to wear a FAMU jersey. The truth is, if that unlikly game happens, FAMU would beat JSU like a drum.

How in the world could you seat 30,000 in a 60,000-seat venue and still maintain a 6-feet spacing?

Where did you get 6 feet spacing as a requirement for seating? Seating will be determined by a percentage of capacity and groups who are ticketed together are allowed to be seated together. If 6 feet is a requirement, then I can assure you there will be NO football this fall.

You must didn't know y'all capping out at 15-20k? They had a on call meeting to see the plans for the up coming season.

As I understand it, according to the CDC, social distancing, aka physical distancing, means keeping space between yourself and others outside of your home, of at least 6 feet or 2 arms' length from other people. Now this obviously applies to everyday situations, and if crowd-seating engages a different set of rules, then perhaps the same does not apply. It is based on this standard that I say it would be an impossibility to seat 30,000 in a 60K-seat space.

The CDC supplies suggested recommendations/guidelines, not mandates. Governors of each state will dictate how his/her state will respond to large gatherings. As of today the state of MS has yet to determine how it will proceed this fall as it pertains to sporting events. There are a few models under consideration.
You’ll get a glimpse of what some of those models are when baseball starts up And how they may differ from state to state unless MLB sets a uniform standard.

The Govenor of the state of Mississippi, like most Southern Republican governors, chose to follow Trump's guidance, as opposed to CDC recommendations, when shutting down the state in the first place. So, it would not be ureasonable to assume that he might shun CDC guidelines again and suggest a more lenient approach. It's what Republicans do; put economics ahead of peope's lives!
