'Guarantee' games are they worth it for the HBCUs

FBS teams will pay their opponents at least $15 million this past weekend weekend for the so called, "MONEY GAMES."

The so-called "guarantee" games, for playing at the bigger opponent's stadium without returning to play at their stadium IS IT REALLY WORTH IT. It is really worth players getting humiliated for the benefit of the Universities and in most cases no money goes back to the Athletic budget and we know absolutely none to the players.

Take a look at this weekend:

GT 69 Alcorn 6
Cal 73 Grambling 14
La Tech 62 Southern 15
MTSU 70 JSU 14
NM 66 MVSU 0
Cinn 52 A & M 10

Points allowed 392 Points scored 59

This can surely impact recruiting when you are totally embarrassed and there are other implications as well. I hope we have learned a lesson, the greatest one being we CANNOT compete at those levels.

I can tell most of you really don't know the kind of money HBCU'S need. Second of all I can really break it down for you why we don't get research real dollars and what HBCU'S are really prepared. In fact it's only five, yes five that really have departments prepared. We play these games for a reason. Wake up.........
 
I think you have posed a very profound question. I believe our administrators should be walking a very fine line between making a payday and the psychological toll these games can take on the student athlete. Certainly any program that endeavor into this potential carnage should have a psychologist on staff (glad Southern does). Also, If you're going to continue to play these games, you certainly have to invest more money into recruiting a higher caliber of athlete and become as strategic as possible in choosing the opponent. I say "as strategic as possible" because one of the worse teams in FBS put 66 points (NMST) on S.U. which goes back to my first point of investing more in recruiting. If we are not able to do the two then we need to stay in our lane (lower tier FCS and DII where it's economically feasible). I'm not sure about how the erosion of our HBCU brand is measured (must importantly by us) and/or will it continue to take a hit by the larger community. However, when watching highlights this morning, Jeff Driskel received a backhand compliment with Southern being the brunt of the joke. I used S.U. in several examples but this is applicable to all HBCU(s).
 
I don't have a problem with these games as long as players don't get injured...

our players love these games because they get to see how they measure up...many of them dreamed about playing fbs competition so I don't think it matters to them. We get a nice payday from Cincy and an open weekend to heal up before we enter swac play where the playing field is even...

When we play FBS competition at A&M it opens up doors to many other opportunities...right after we played AUBURN in 2012 FBS teams started calling because they see our brand & want us to come play....we play Auburn again next year...and yes more calls will come in...even ga tech got us a game with cincy.....

So keep your ego in check to you can continue to get beat by 50 and that is the first half alone. We don't have that kind of support that they have, for some of them, huge revenues from the TV contracts that we just don't have. I would love to see us make some of these games close just to scare them enough to think twice before scheduling so-called beat down games.
 
I hate these games. it's just embarrassing. if that's what it takes to keep our programs afloat then we're talking about a problem so deep at the fundamental level at some of our schools that we should maybe consider shutting these programs down until they can get the basic problems fixed. and that includes my own alma mater, because what's going on in orangeburg is just disgraceful.

I'm sorry, but considering that just about every SWAC and MEAC school that played up this weekend got "drove" for the money, I'm willing to bet anything those kids will care less about those beat downs come Celebration Bowl time. Their minds are not that fragile.

I'm not concerned about every other school and what they do, all I care about is the health and vitality of our schools. If some of our programs didn't get these games every year they'd shut down. We're not seeing any improvement year after year, nor major improvements in facilities that I'm aware of; no, what we're getting is the same old "financial mismanagement" ie stealing, that we've been dealing with at too many of our schools.

THAT'S what needs fixing. Get rid of the thieves and put some honest, competent people in charge and we wouldn't need games like this.
 
We had 250 yards against one of the top defenses in the country. That's not bad. It proves we can move the ball. We moved it on their first string defense too.
 
It's not just our schools playing in some of these money games, they are other FCS schools doing the same. Some have better luck than others but they are still getting beat like our schools.

Half of the kids WANT to play a game against FBS level competition anyway.
