UAB shutting down program becomes reality

Alabama-Birmingham is firing athletic director Brian Mackin and will announce later this week that it will be shutting down its football program, according to a source familiar with the matter.

The announcement will likely be Thursday and is a move that boosters and former players had feared for the last month. UAB is undergoing a university-wide yearlong comprehensive strategic planning study that includes the evaluation of the financial viability of football.

thats not the answer..... UAB is under the University of Alabama board of trustees..... until they break off football will always be under funded. The UA Board of Trustees dont want UAB to compete with Bama. You already see UAB has the best basketball program in the state. UA won't even schedule UAB. One day I see UAB breaking away from the University of Alabama system. I think UAB is most important university to the state of Alabama.

Exactly! I understand there was recent talk of possibly expanding that Board of Trustees in order to give the Majors of B'ham and Huntsville a seat, however, that would require an amendment to the State's constitution! :read:

They'll probably do what UNO did. UNO switched from the LSU System to the UL System. They are now part of the Southland Conference without a football program, but they will probably add one in the near future. UNO and UAB are very similar, since they are both public universities located in their States most populous metro areas.

If they do, I dont see Alabama letting them having the medical school
 
The UA system tried to do the same thing with UAH hockey..... Hockey is the main sport at UAH and the UA system tried their hardest to get rid of it.
 
Uab offered jimbo fisher the job in 2007 and the alabama board shot it down like duck season as fisher would have been light years better than who they had at the time
 
UAB is doing what a lot of SWAC schools need to do. Most of us are just a waste of time and money. I applaud UAB
 
The real question here is, if UAB isn't gonna play at Legion Field anymore and there's only going to be one game a year there... how long is it gonna be until....

???? Nick Saban was named Alabama's coach for the 2007 football season.

UNO students won't vote to add athletics fees. They've had football in the past and recently as a club team that played home games at one point at Tad Gormley and Pan American in City Park, but they're still studying to see the feasibility of having an FCS program.
 
uab football is just getting crushed by their UA board. but since they're going to vacate their C-USA football spot bama state need to see if they can get thatll lol.

Lol...Bama State is accepting donations for the $1m entry fee to move up to FBS. Will you donate money to make this move?
 
UAB booster believes killing football program is a 'done deal,' a decision 2 decades in the making

Jimmy Filler, founder of the UAB Football Foundation, is particularly frustrated because he says he can raise as much as $5 million this year for the program, but no one seems to want it.

"Guess how many times the administration has reached out to me since I announced the foundation? Zero," Filler told AL.com on Monday. "They never called me, they never asked me. It's a done deal. They don't want me to raise money."

UAB head coach Bill Clark told AL.com on Sunday that he was still fighting for the program's future and "waiting for somebody to tell me what's going on." Another source within the athletic department who asked not to be named believes the decision to disband the football program was made months ago.

wait, what? Is this a joke? We don't eve compete with the rest of the FCS world to see where we stack up and you expect for Bama St to just jump up a division? Yeah, ok.

Tim Brando reported this last week on his radio show, I wonder how the national media this story a Power 5 conference school straight up shutting down another FBS football program.
