South Carolina State is considering dropping their men's basketball program:

Yikes.

As I said in the article, most schools cut golf, tennis or bowling, not a revenue spot like football. If they are going to cut a sport, cut the 60-65 schollie draining football team (but it seems like basketball might be the scapegoat)

SCST has a very good football program that also provides exposure for a very good band. Basketball is not equivalent to Football @ SCST....

The overhead in basketball is way less. With Money games, it's easy to make a profit in basketball.

That's why I made my original post. Plus as you said, they could just load up on money games (basketball).

Meanwhile bidding to host a playoff game that will lose money is not cost effective

SCState's athletic program is in way worse shape then FAMU. Without the support of subsidized School Funds, SCState's athletic program would have a deficit of ($39,118,248) from 2005 to 2013, which is an average deficit of ($4,346,472) per year. Some folks haven't come to realize that most HBCU's athletic programs are huge liabilities as the budget tightens for each State in this country. Those subsidized School Funds will be eliminated as a part of the athletic budget, especially at public colleges and universities. Grambling's past season mishap was the tip of the iceberg that a lot of HBCU's athletic programs will experience in the future.

You can't cancel football at a school like SCState without the alumni rioting. It's not going to happen. Why kill a successful program?

Also, the only way our basketball teams keep their heads above water is through money games. And those aren't high-revenue games. Why drop a successful popular program for one that has to lose to stay afloat?

Dropping football @ SCST would be akin to a self inflicted wound. Too many people just look at that little money in athletics and forget it is a university first. The football program @ SCST has benefits that can't be seen strictly in an athletic budget. The basketball program on the other hand would not have as adverse of an impact on the university enrollment wise compared to football which also has a direct trail to the band......

You probably haven't been keeping up, but they came up in that area big time when they hired Mr. Ellis from Morris Brown. SCST will hurt your feelings these days if you're not prepared. Again, you have to look at the big picture. This is a recruiting tool that is certainly fueled by the football program.

Trust me, I am familiar with every HBCU band, they are big, but far from good. Also, Morris Brown wasn't a good band program either(just had a lot of hype but no substance), but that's a different conversation.

Also, for good band programs, the success of the football team really has no effect on the band. They allow for us to perform at the football games, but if BCU went 0-11 10 years in a row, they would still be a great band. Heck, PV had an excellent and big band back in the day when they were everyone's homecoming opponent.

You don't know what you're talking about and getting off topic. Again Football is a bigger recruiting tool that also fuels that band which is also a bigger recruiting tool than basketball @ SCST.

I know exactly what I'm talking about. Football draws more attention than basketball at most schools, and it also gives the bands exposure because they get to perform in different areas of the country that may not have seen them. That is clear, but the quality of the band has nothing to do with that. Being a good band takes more than having a lot of people in the program. Everything I said was 100% accurate.

You are intent on losing sight of the topic. Some of you band heads are the most delusional folks in American and if you ask me, Ohio State makes all of you look like certified jackasses. However that besides the point. SCST Football is where it all starts and the recruiting tool that they will not lose for the basketbal program. No one would even give two shits about the band if the football program would not provide the forum for them thus losing that recruiting tool.

SC State is okay. I know Mr Knighten had worked with them before he passed away. They have always been solid.

Band heads crack me up LOL.

i agree with number1 on this tho. SCState came to HONDA and got rave reviews but if you watch that show, it will make you cry. That show was horrible and the drilling was the most horrid thing I have ever witnessed.

But that drivel was :topic:

:lmao:

Some of you may not have been paying attention but SCState has been in trouble for YEARS. I think 2-3 years ago, their enrollment had shrunk them down to the size of a small school like Alcorn. The state was trying to kill them.

How much $$ is spent on the band vs. the football team?

Some of these guys are just weak. :emlaugh: You drop that football program and those band members are going to another school that has one so their talent can be showcased at half time. Football is the foundation for this recruiting tool. When it comes to enrollment and alumni support, the basketball program cannot match this asset.

Did I not just post that exact same thing? I just said that they provide an avenue for us to perform and get exposure. Is that not what you are saying?

Recruiting however is just a part of the process. You can have 1000 people in your band, and still not be good. It is more than just recruiting and exposure that makes a band program good. The other stuff comes from the ability of the director to get his/her students to buy in and perform at a high level. That's what I have been saying since my first post on this topic, but you are too sports-driven to read and comprehend what I have been saying. Ya'll are giving too much credit to the football team for that.

Just like how with football, recruiting is only part of the task of having a successful program, band is the same thing. Ya'll need to get out of your feelings and learn how to comprehend before flaming on here.

What's crazy is I have been saying the same thing they have been saying. All I have been saying is that the quality of the band has nothing to do with just exposure. The band directors still have to teach the students to make them perform good.

You drop football, and that band program will still have its concert band programs to rely on.
