South Alabama copies AAMU

I knew it would not be long before AAMU's plan would be emulated by other state schools. Expect to see all of the schools during this by next year.

MOBILE, Alabama -- The South Alabama football coaching staff is taking its show on the road. But it will open that show at home.

The Jaguars' coaching staff will feature a two-day football camp for players in the ninth to 12th grades June 20 and 21 on the school's intramural fields, located just below the football field house on campus adjacent to Joe Gottfried Drive.

From there, the coaches will conduct clinics, also for players from the ninth to 12th grades, in Dothan (June 22), Montgomery (June 23), Birmingham (June 24) and Decatur (June 25).
 



AAMU ain't going to be the only one being copied. Let the SWAC keep coming up with their HBCU Classics in the Caribbean and stuff and watch some of these other FBS schools will bite it.

They have already started copying that. They just call it "neutral site games" to differentiate from "classics."

last week camps were Crews Stadium on Monday (Huntsville), Huffman High School on Tuesday (Birmingham), Faulkner University (Montgomery) on Wednesday , and Blount High on Thursday (Mobile) .... There were over many scholarships offered from the camps and each camp had 30-50 participants.

these other schools in Alabama realize the sleeping giant which is A&M football has been awakened lol

when Hicks hired Spady to bring the Pistol offense to "the hill" I knew all this would happen...

now we know Troy JaxSU USA Samford UAB lookin at us like uhhh ohhhh lol :lol:

In all honesty, we simply haven't had too many coaches to be as aggressive in recruiting. Ron Cooper maybe, but others like Jones have simply taken whatever is left. We step up our recruiting and other schools in the state are going to do the same. It is what it is. I just wish that we had staff on "The Hill" that was doing stuff like this a long time ago---->before S.Alabama or UAB established it's program, before Troy went from D2 all the way to 1A, before Jax State went from D2 to 1-AA or Samford went from D3 to 1-AA...but it is what it is....

Our problem was that hiring was based upon friendships, not upon what unique ability a coach brought to the school. Spady was a hire based upon potential to compete with other FBS schools in the state and country. This is a different philosophy about the direction of AAMU football.

the best thing A&M did was bring Pres Hugine to A&M....a SC state grad and former president of the school who understands the importance of a good football program...he in turn hired AD Hicks a Jourich protégé at Louisville..and then the great hire of Spady....we have been on the come up since Hugine got here

but like you said A&M should have been doing this decades ago but the buddy system instead of what was best held us back....

Spady knew the president....don't think that was a blind hire...rarely are there blind hires these days...a president will in so many ways help you narrow the list down and then step out the way at the end but they have a direct input to the program

That their paths had crossed did not necessarily make them friends... At any rate, it is not a problem to hire a friend if the friend is the best one for the job, as Spady was. No one on the list for consideration could have been any more proactive than Spady, or have as good a game plan as Spady has implemented. In fact, it is his conceptual ideas that are most valuable. He believes that he should always hire someone for a position that knows more about that position than he does. In other words, he seeks to expand his knowledge by hiring people from whom he can learn something. That is something I have advocated in my decision-making process.

P.S. The Coaches Caravan will hit Houston in a week or so. Don't be surprised if we have a camp in Houston next year. Our defensive line coach was at Texas A&M and recruited the Houston area. In our progressive thought process, first the Southeast...Then, who knows... Make sure PV wakes up before it is too late.
 
Copied? Everyone is doing this kind of thing nowadays... and I think there is some concern actually too, especially after Penn State announced its plans to do a camp in the south in-conjunction with a Sun Belt school (forget which one, think one of the GSUs in Georgia).

This summer, Sam Houston State's coaching staff has an 'Elite Camp' in the DFW area and in the Houston area. They've scored guest coaches from Oklahoma, Rutgers, and Northwestern. This is the new way to do it ... and by SHSU hosting with some "major schools" there as guests, the Kats not only increase their profile, but probably get some additional prospective student-athletes that may not have come if it weren't for the big schools. Fact is as we all know, a few kids probably still think they are quality to get scholarship from OU, Rutgers or NW, when they probably should be in FCS! LOL...
