Teen banned from prom over controversial dress

I really don't know what to think about white people that wears the rebel flag, because I'm not them, but it's still a racist symbol. And like Founder said, let them wear it, because they have that right.

There's a big difference between racism and ignorance. If someone kill you because you are black, most likely it's racism, which is what folks are saying Zimmerman did to Trayvon Martin, but if someone kill you because of some color you are wearing that is just pure ignorance.

Always remember the Confederate flag was a symbol used by those who wanted to keep Black people in slavery, such as the Nazi symbol to Jews.

Preach!!

Yes, I understand all white people are not racist, but I got enough sense to understand there are enough of them that don't give a dam about the black race. Also folks please stop always using black on black crime every time some racist white person does something to justify what white America does. Yes brothas need to stop the killing, but if you gone bring up a point tell the truth about, 70% of all black on black murders have to with money and drugs. Not just some black man killing some black person just because they are black. Street life for the white man quick dollar is what leads to this violence. Folks have been killing each other over drugs, money, women and envy before Jesus walked this earth. Find yall a new line to use the I love white folks ok. Also why do you all hate Jessie and Al for bringing issues about what white folks do so bad? Just because you stick your head in between your legs when white folks bother you or do wrong doesn't mean every one else should.

Even though the south lost the war, which is it, heritage or hate?

That's the part that gets me. Some people try to claim "heritage", but there is not a person alive today that actually lived in the Confederate States of America.

Some Southerners don't seem to realize that the Confederate flag is often used as a symbol of racism and hatred both in the South and elsewhere. Back home, if you saw a Confederate flag somewhere it was in your best interest to go in the opposite direction. Nine times out of ten, the person or persons with the flag or paraphernalia were not from the South and weren't claiming heritage or roots.

I often tell the story about the three weeks that I attended Robert E. Lee High School in Baton Rouge back when they were still the Rebels. Even though the school had become mostly Black, the White kids still waved the Confederate flag at pep rallies and their dance team was called the Confederettes. I asked one Black girl on the Confederettes if the name bothered her. She said that it didn't. I had to fight the urge to call her a stupid azz bytch, because that's exactly what she was for being a proud Confederette.

Just last night 3 girls came over to the house for my mom to halter their dresses. All three had all types of body parts hanging out. My mom told them she was not going to take part in them looking like a street walker and refused to alter the dresses. The young ladies left and two of the moms called back complaining to my mother about why and one even threatened not to vote for my mom when she up for re-election.

My mother simply said, your daughters are too young to be dressed like this and you should teach them that womanhood does not mean having to show all you assets. They hung up on mom.

The third young ladies parents were unaware of her prom dress of choice. She was going to spend the night at the one of the other girls home.

I said that because many times parents have no idea of what their children are doing and the way children perceive things is a learned ability which falls in the realm of ignorance.

So how do you handle it, you let the kid embarrass herself and 20 years later, prayerfully through life lessons she will hate she even wore it to that special night.

Me personally I'm not going to blame every problem black people have on racism. Furthermore, 90% of the black on black crime is not because of drugs or gangs but ignorance and a lack of involvement by educated people like ourselves.

I know skinheads who hate they tatted their body such hate symbols because they realized that black people and Jews are not bad people at all. Exposure and learning is the key.

While you can't blame all problems on racism, the root of our plight is being driven by white imperialism.

I say let the girl wear the dress. If they didn't ban kids from wearing clothes with the rebel flag on it during the school year, why try to enforce the rule now?

Personally I see the flag as a symbol of hate. Never cared for it and never will.

When I see Black people from the United States defending Confederate symbols, it tells me that they really do not know their history and is very ignorant. I bet you'll never see a Jewish person defending symbols of Nazi Germany. Just like the Jewish Holocaust caused the death of millions of Jewish people throughout Nazi control Europe, the Black Holocaust caused the death of millions of Black people throughout America.

No one is defending the flag. Folks just saying, let her wear the dress. It is not that serious.

Other than her principal, no one on this board is saying she should not wear it, but it is still a symbol of racism.

So is the American flag if you put it in perspective truthfully. The same things done to black people under one was done under the other.

I can remember when Black people were the only ones patonizing the Robert E. Lee Movie theater on Plank Road before it closed.

Robert E. Lee High School in Baton Rouge is not along. I'm sure CEE DOG and others from Alabama are familiar with these two schools from Alabama:

If the principal would have banned the rebel flag from all clothing all year, then I'd be on board with banning this dress from the prom. Dude losses credibility with me by wanting to pick and choose when to enforce a clothing ban.

Sure there were slavery throughout, but eventually the United States decided to abolish it, which started the Civil War that ended slavery. If the Confederate States of America would have survived, there would have been a continuation of slavery. Therefore, any Confederate symbols represents to me a continuation of Black People Holocaust in America.

Pops is right about the American flag. America is a symbol of imperialism. I'm real leery around folks who are uber patriotic. Shoot, black people shouldn't even celebrate Independence Day, considering our ancestors were still slaves when America broke from British strongholds.

I was going to post something similar earlier in the thread. I wonder how the native Americans feels about the United States flag....

I'm sure native Americans don't like it, but United States of America is still a functional government. The Confederate States of America does not exist anymore. Why would there be a need to continue to display and honor the weak symbols of the Confederacy? And I say weak because Confederate lost the war.

Well, this was enlightening to me. Yes I clumped everyone who wears one as a racist. I admit that I may be wrong. For many it has evolved to something other than JUST racial hate. Yet, they should not wear them because they know what it means to others. There are things I would not wear because I know it is offensive to others.
You know... on the freeway going home in 2008.. I saw a large decal of a rebel flag in on the window of chevy truck that passed me. Did not faze me because here in the South I see it all the time...but this truck caught my attention. On the bottom of the window it had one of those famous Obama 08 blue stickers. I said what the fugg. So I sped up to check out the driver... and when I passed him ..yep he was white. lol. Also I remember stopping at a service station outside of Little Rock..I saw this White dude with a T-shirt with a rebel flag on the back...but as he turned around I saw on the front of the shirt Jimi Hendrix.. Anyway I have seen countless of bumper stickers that says Rednecks For Obama with the Rebel Flag underneath. Also I have worked with white guys in the Navy and at work who wore caps with rebel flags on them and those guys went to bat for me when things got dicey on the job. But my biggest memory is when I was stranded on the the freeway going to work..and a car that was going in the opposite direction turned around and cross the median. When the car pulled up I saw a big ass front license plate of the rebel flag. White dude got out of the car and gave me assistance on my car. Really if I had not had these experiences my attitude would be different or more militant as I used to be in my teenage years and 20's. Now I know that there are Southern whites that display the rebel flag that are racists. But back to my co-workers who wore the rebel flag, and I asked them why do they wear it..and they say it represents Southern lifestyle for them, grits, catfish, deer hunitng, fishing, just having a down home attitude without having your nose so high up in the air. Also one of my shipmates on the ship told me that there are white folx who display the American flag who are even more racist....go to Boston or Chicago. He made his point.

I feel you. I'm a realist...and racism and rebel flags will never go away. I would just rather focus my attention on helping these foolish young black boys not to go to prison and focus on an education....To each is on. I'm not saying you are wrong....because on a certain scheme you are right as the flag being a symbol of hate.

So tell me how does a person live in Mississippi? Is the state flag a sign of hate?

I remember when I worked for a Louisiana Legislator....there was an idea to have all the flags that have flown over Louisiana around the state capital. Well the issue of the confederate flag came up and some white and black legislators said that they were just going to leave that pole without a flag because of what it represented. Well, some crackers acted a fool and the heritage issue came up. Well the idea was scrapped and replaced with the idea of fyling flags of choice by the legislature...voted by the legislature.

The rebel flag has never been flown. :emlaugh:

With some people, it's always somebody else's fault. The man, the "system", God ....

:smh:

Nobody is saying that one should absolve themselves from personal responsibility. However, we also can't disregard the fact that there are forces and entities working every day to suppress us individually and collectively as well. And to not realize that will only quicken our demise.

I remember when I was a battery commander in the Army and we had just moved into our new buildings/barracks. All the soldiers that lived in the barracks basically decorated their rooms the way they wanted to. For those that don't know, barracks are not like what you see in the old movies, they are step up like hotel rooms/college dorms now. So these guys could pretty much decorate their walls with what they want to, so long as it's not lewd or offensive.

A bunch of the black soldiers and a few hispanics came to me with concerns about the "white boys" having rebel flags on their walls. They saw it as racist and offensive. I looked up the regulations and it said nothing of the confederate flag being offensive. But I did tell them, I would raised it up through the chain of command. So, I along with the other unit commanders (their soldiers went to them too) told the battalion commander and he said he would take it up with the chain of command and ask the brigade commander what the policy was. The brigade commander then took it up with the Post commander Gen. Sherfield (who happend to be black/SU grad btw) and he had his staff look into it. So what basically ended up happening, is that the Army basically catered to the lowest common denominator and told the soldiers that the only flags they could display on their walls were the American flag! After that verdict, all the soldiers that had Jamaican, Cuban, Hatian, and Mexican flags displayed basically said it was o.k. for them to have the confederate flags and they wanted to rescind what they had put forth into motion. But it was too late then. I told them they should have thought about that before. BTW, they also had to remove them half naked women off the walls too because according to the Army...they would offend female inspectors that came into the living quarters.

I keep telling people....be careful what you wish for.
